The Georgia Southern Eagles will travel to Kidd Brewer Stadium to take on the Appalachian State Mountaineers this Saturday afternoon in College Football action.
The Georgia Southern Eagles dropped to 3-8 on the season after being defeated by the 14th ranked BYU Cougars, 34-17, this past Saturday night. Georgia Southern had no answers on the defensive end for BYU and could not fight back after BYU took a 27-17 lead on a 1-yard TD run by Tyler Allgeier early in the 3rd quarter. Georgia Southern was outgained by BYU by a 507-268 margin and lost the turnover battle by a 2-0 margin in the loss. Leading the way for the Eagles was RB Logan Wright who had 50 rushing yards & 2 TD on 14 carries.
On the season, Georgia Southern is averaging 21.8 ppg on 354.5 total yards per game (150.7 passing yds/g; 203.8 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Georgia Southern has been led by RB trio of Logan Wright (136 att, 766 yards, 8 TD), Gerald Green (75 att, 423 yards, 5 TD), & Jalen White (60 att, 345 yards, 4 TD). Gerald Green missed the Eagles game against BYU due to a concussion and is questionable for this matchup. QB Justin Tomlin (51.7 Comp %; 977 yards, 2 TD, 9 INT) missed last game due to an undisclosed injury and if he can’t go again, we should expect Connor Cigelske to get another start after completing 11 of 14 passes for 122 yards & 1 INT against BYU. The top receiving threats for the Eagles have been Khaleb Hood (33 rec, 424 yards), Derwin Burgess Jr. (17 rec, 311 yards, 1 TD), & Beau Johnson (15 rec, 162 yards, 3 TD).
Defensively, Georgia Southern is allowing their opponents to average 31.8 ppg on 452.3 total yards per game (293.5 passing yds/g; 158.7 rushing yds/g).
The Appalachian State Mountaineers won their 5th straight game and improved to 9-2 on the season after defeating the Troy Trojans, 45-7, this past Saturday. Appalachian State had no trouble generating offense against the tough Troy defense and pulled away in the 3rd quarter after a 5-yard TD run by Nate Noel gave the Mountaineers a 31-7 lead. Appalachian State outgained Troy by a 445-142 margin and forced 2 turnovers in the victory. Leading the way for the Mountaineers was Nate Noel who had 102 rushing yards & 1 TD on 15 carries.
On the season, Appalachian State is averaging 36.5 ppg on 450.0 total yards per game (252.3 passing yds/g; 197.7 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Appalachian State has been led by the RB duo of Nate Noel (175 att, 1013 yards, 4 TD) & Camerun Peoples (138 att, 739 yards, 13 TD). QB Chase Brice has completed 64.9% of his passes for 2666 yards, 20 TD, & 10 INT. The top receiving threats for the Mountaineers have been Corey Sutton (54 rec, 821 yards, 7 TD), Malik Williams (47 rec, 735 yards, 5 TD), & Thomas Hennigan (46 rec, 594 yards, 4 TD).
Defensively, Appalachian State is holding their opponents to an average of 20.4 ppg on 330.7 total yards per game (214.9 passing yds/g; 115.8 rushing yds/g).
The Eagles are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS win & 8-3 ATS vs. a team with a winning record. The Mountaineers are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall & 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games vs. a team with a losing record.
Appalachian State is no doubt the better team here, however, I’m just a bit concerned that we might not the starters finishing this game as the Mountaineers have already clinched their spot in the Sun Belt Championship game against Louisiana next week. Georgia Southern has struggled on both ends of the field this season, however, they have been competitive the last two weeks and as I think the Mountaineers are going to lay off the gas after they get up a bit, I think the Eagles will do just enough to cover with the points here. Good Luck!
