The Akron Zips will travel to the Glass Bowl to take on the Toledo Rockets this Saturday afternoon in College Football action.
The Akron Zips lost their 5th straight game and dropped to 2-9 on the season after being defeated by the Kent State Golden Flashes, 38-0, this past Saturday. Akron was dominated by Kent State on both ends of the field and could not fight back after going into halftime trailing by a 29-0 margin. Akron was outgained by Kent State by a 476-188 margin and lost the turnover battle by a 2-0 margin in the loss. Leading the way for the Zips was RB Jonzell Norrils who had 50 rushing yards on 34 carries.
On the season, Akron is averaging 20.4 ppg on 337.1 total yards per game (221.4 passing yds/g; 115.7 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Akron has been led by QB Zach Gibson who has completed 69.4% of his passes for 1262 yards, 10 TD, & 0 INT. The top receiving threats for the Zips have been Konata Mumpfield (61 rec, 723 yards, 8 TD), Michael Mathison (56 rec, 706 yards, 3 TD), & Tristian Brank (24 rec, 260 yards, 3 TD). Leading the way for the Akron backfield has been Jonzell Norrils (105 att, 483 yards, 3 TD) & Blake Hester (65 att, 274 yards, 2 TD).
Defensively, Akron is allowing their opponents to average 38.6 ppg on 457.0 total yards per game (211.0 passing yds/g; 246.0 rushing yds/g).
The Toledo Rockets won their 2nd straight game and improved to 6-5 on the season after defeating the Ohio Bobcats, 35-23, on November 16th. Toledo led by a 14-6 margin at halftime and was able to pull away after 21-unanswered points in the 2nd half gave the Rockets a 35-9 lead with 10:43 left in the 4th quarter. Toledo was outgained by Ohio by a 445-401 margin, however, did win the turnover battle by a 1-0 margin in the victory. Leading the way for the Rockets was RB Bryant Koback who had 203 rushing yards & 4 TD on 21 carries.
On the season, Toledo is averaging 32.8 ppg on 421.1 total yards per game (235.9 passing yds/g; 185.2 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Toledo has been led by RB Bryant Koback who has 1139 rushing yards & 13 TD on 175 carries while also hauling in 27 receptions for 286 yards & 2 TD. QB Dequan Finn has completed 59.5% of his passes for 1575 yards, 12 TD, & 1 INT while also rushing for 409 yards & 8 TD on 94 carries. The top receiving threats for the Rockets have been Devin Maddox (36 rec, 473 yards, 3 TD), Isaiah Winstead (31 rec, 463 yards), & Matt Landers (11 rec, 320 yards, 4 TD).
Defensively, Toledo is holding their opponents to an average of 21.6 ppg on 340.3 total yards per game (193.0 passing yds/g; 147.3 rushing yds/g).
The Zips are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 November games and just 9-20 ATS in their last 29 conference games. The Rockets are 4-0 ATS vs. a team with a losing record and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games after accumulating more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game.
Akron has been competitive in a few games recently, however, the Zips looked flat last week against Kent State and just haven’t gotten it done on either end of the field this season as they come into this game ranked just 116th in scoring offense & 124th in scoring defense. Toledo has looked solid the last weeks in convincing road wins against Bowling Green & Ohio and concerning the fact that Toledo ranked 45th in rushing offense and will be going against an Akron defense that just allowed Kent State to rush for 410 yards & 4 TD on 52 carries (7.9 yds/rush), I think Toledo ends their regular season with a 30+ point win.
