The Michigan Wolverines and Maryland Terrapins face off on Saturday in a Big Ten college football showdown at Byrd Stadium. When these two teams faced off in 2019 it was Michigan that came away with the 38-7 victory.
The Michigan Wolverines seem to still control their own destiny for the college football playoff sitting with a 9-1 record. In the last game Michigan was tested by Penn State on the road, but the defense gave up only 17 points, and that led to the four point victory. Michigan is averaging 34.7 points while their defense is giving up 16.1 points per game. Cade McNamara is under center for Michigan throwing for 1,833 yards, 12 touchdowns, and two interceptions. Running back Hassan Haskins has also had 196 rushing attempts for 985 yards and 11 touchdowns. In this game, Michigan is going to need the defense to be good.
On the other side of this matchup is the Maryland Terrapins who sit with a 5-5 record and they have lost two games in a row. In the last game against Michigan State, the defense struggled giving up 40 points and that led to the 19 point defeat. Maryland is averaging 26.9 points while their defense is giving up 31.4 points per game. Under center for the Terrapins is Taulia Tagovailoa who has thrown for 3.105 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. The biggest issue has been his inconsistency though, and they need him to have his best game of the season or this could be a long game.
Michigan is 5-1 against the spread in their last six games overall. Maryland is 16-35 against the spread in their last 51 conference games. Maryland is 0-6 against the spread in their last six games overall. The favorite is 5-0 in the last five meetings.
I expect Maryland’s offense is going to struggle in this game, and Michigan is going to have no issue getting the job done. Look for Maryland to finish with ten points or less, and Michigan will cover the spread.
