The Illinois Fighting Illini and Iowa Hawkeyes face off on Saturday in a college football showdown at Kinnick Stadium. When these two teams faced off in December of 2020, it was Iowa that came away with the 35-21 victory.
The big news for Illinois is they won’t have coach Bret Bielema who tested positive for COVID. Illinois comes into this game with a 4-6 record overall but they are coming off a big win. THe Fighting Illini held Minnesota to only six points, and that led to the victory. Illinois is averaging only 17.2 points while their defense is giving up 21.6 points per game. Under center for Illinois is Brandon Peters who has thrown for 680 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. In this game, Illinois is going to need their defense to be strong and lock down Iowa’s offense.
On the other side of this matchup is the Iowa Hawkeyes who sit with an 8-2 record overall and they are coming off a big win against Minnesota. The defense gave up 22 points, but the offense put up 27 points. Iowa is averaging 24.7 points while their defense is giving up 16.3 points per game. One big question for Iowa heading into this game is who will be under center. Spencer Petras was the starter to start the season but he is dealing with an injury and it’s unclear if he will go in this game. In the last game against Minnesota, Alex Padilla threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns.
The under is 5-0 in Illinois last five games. The under is 5-1 in Illinois last six games played on the road. Iowa is 5-0 straight up in their last five games playing against Illinois.
Illinois is a good defensive team, but their offense has so many issues moving the ball. I expect Illinois is going to lock down the Iowa offense, but the Fighting Illini are also going to really struggle to score. This game is going to go under the total, and I wouldn’t be shocked if there is less than 25 points total.
