The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers won their 4th straight game and improved to 5-4 on the season after defeating the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders, 48-21, this past Saturday. Western Kentucky got their best defensive performance of the season and had no trouble pulling away in the 2nd half after going into halftime with a 31-14 lead. Western Kentucky outgained Middle Tennessee by a 352-349 margin and won the turnover battle by a 7-0 margin in the victory. Leading the way for the Hilltoppers was QB Bailey Zappe who completed 29 of 50 passes for 281 yards & 4 TD.

Offensively, Western Kentucky has been led by QB Bailey Zappe who has completed 69.8% of his passes for 3688 yards, 37 TD, & 6 INT. The top receiving threats for Zappe and the Hilltoppers have been Jerreth Sterns (104 rec, 1276 yards, 11 TD), Mitchell Tinsley (43 rec, 680 yards, 6 TD), Malachi Corley (54 rec, 520 yards, 5 TD), & Daewood Davis (25 rec, 416 yards, 6 TD). Defensively Western Kentucky is allowing their opponents to average 29.4 ppg on 422.9 total yards per game (254.2 passing yds/g; 168.7 rushing yds/g).
The Rice Owls lost their 2nd straight game and dropped to 3-6 on the season after being defeated by the Charlotte 49ers, 31-24 in OT, this past Saturday. Rice allowed Charlotte to fight back from a 24-14 deficit with just 6:35 left in the 4th quarter to force OT and the 49ers were able to prevail after a pick-six by Elijah Spencer in the 1st play of OT. Rice outgained Charlotte by a 468-349 margin and won the turnover battle by a 2-1 margin. Leading the way for the Owls was RB Ari Broussard who had 186 rushing yards & 2 TD on 20 carries.

The Hilltoppers are 4-1 ATS vs. a team with a losing record, however, are just 3-8-1 ATS in their last 12 games as a road favorite. The Owls are 9-4-1 ATS vs. a team with a winning record, however, are just 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games overall.
Western Kentucky has piled on the wins recently behind what is College Football’s top-ranked passing attack, however, with the recent success, I think this line has been shifted just a bit two high as I don’t think Western Kentucky should almost be three TD road favorites. Rice has had a disappointing season, especially on the defensive end, however, the Owls recently picked up a nice win at UAB while the offense has played better as of late, averaging 26.0 ppg. Rice’s biggest weakness on defense is against the run which they shouldn’t have to worry too much against the Hilltoppers and although I don’t think Rice will be able to get the upset win in this one, I think they do enough to cover at home with the points. Good Luck!
