The Utah State Aggies will travel to CEFCU Stadium to take on the San Jose State Spartans this Saturday night in College Football action.
The Utah State Aggies won their 4th straight game and improved to 7-2 on the season after defeating the New Mexico State Aggies, 35-13, this past Saturday. Utah State trailed by the 13-7 margin at halftime, however, Utah State dominated New Mexico State throughout the 2nd half and was able to pull away after a 4-yard TD run by Elelyon Noa gave the Aggies a 28-13 lead with 5:08 left in the 3rd quarter. Utah State outgained New Mexico State by a 457-347 margin in the victory. Leading the way for the Aggies was WR Deven Thompkins who had 9 receptions for 215 yards & 2 TD.
On the season, Utah State is averaging 31.8 ppg on 475.9 total yards per game (321.0 passing yds/g; 154.9 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Utah State has been led by QB Logan Bonner who has completed 61.6% of his passes for 2486 yards, 21 TD & 9 INT. The top receiving threats for the Aggies have been Deven Thompkins (72 rec, 1314 yards, 8 TD), Brandon Bowling (32 rec, 470 yards, 4 TD), Derek Wright (29 rec, 469 yards, 6 TD), & Justin McGriff (26 rec, 312 yards, 4 TD). Leading the way for the Utah State backfield has been Calvin Tyler Jr. (104 att, 516 yards, 4 TD) & Elelyon Noa (102 att, 431 yards, 3 TD).
Defensively, Utah State is allowing their opponents to average 27.2 ppg on 425.3 total yards per game (259.7 passing yds/g; 165.7 rushing yds/g).
The San Jose State Spartans had their 2-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 5-5 on the season after being defeated by the Nevada Wolf Pack, 27-24, this past Saturday. San Jose State was able to tie the game up late on a 2-yard TD reception by Derrick Deese, however, Nevada was able to pull out the victory after Brando Talton hit a 45-yard game-winning FG for Nevada with just :03 seconds left in the game. San Jose State outgained Nevada by a 449-367 margin, however, did lose the turnover battle by a 3-2 margin in the loss. Leading the way for the Spartans was QB Nick Starkel who completed 21 of 40 passes for 255 yards, 3 TD, & 1 INT.
On the season, San Jose State is averaging 21.4 ppg on 360.9 total yards per game (360.9 passing yds/g; 223.8 passing yds/g; 137.1 rushing yds/g). Offensively, San Jose State has been led by RB Tyler Nevens who has 699 rushing yards & 6 TD on 145 carries. QB Nick Starkel returned last week after missing about a month due to an arm injury and comes into this game completing 50.8% of his passes for 1256 yards, 9 TD, & 6 INT. The top receiving threats for the Spartans have been Derrick Deese Jr. (42 rec, 677 yards, 4 TD), Isaiah Hamilton (25 rec, 385 yards, 2 TD), Charles Ross (25 rec, 305 yards, 2 TD), & Jermaine Braddock (20 rec, 304 yards, 2 TD).
Defensively, San Jose State is allowing their opponents to average 23.0 ppg on 355.9 total yards per game (222.2 passing yds/g; 133.7 rushing yds/g).
The Aggies are 6-3 ATS in their last 9 games, however, are just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games against an opponent in the Mountain West – West Division. The Spartans are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games and 9-1 straight up in their last 10 home games.
Utah State has been outstanding this season, led by a solid passing duo in QB Logan Bonner & WR Deven Thompkins, however, this is a team that looked lost in the 1st half this past weekend against New Mexico State and recently struggled on the road against a UNLV team that has just one win on the season. San Jose State has been solid defensively this season, ranking 48th in scoring defense, and as the Spartans have plenty of offensive weapons with Nick Starkel back, I think the Spartans will win this home game by a TD and cover this spread. Good Luck!
