The Duke Blue Devils will travel to Lane Stadium to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies this Saturday afternoon in College Football action.
The Duke Blue Devils lost their 5th consecutive game and dropped to 3-6 on the season after being defeated by the 25th ranked Pittsburgh Panthers, 54-29, this past Saturday. Duke gave Pittsburgh a battle early in this one and even held a 19-14 lead at one point, however, the Blue Devils struggled defensively the rest of the way and could not fight back after a 2-yard TD run by the Panthers Jordan Addison gave Pittsburgh a 44-22 lead with 4:36 left in the 3rd quarter. Duke was outgained by Pittsburgh by a 636-376 margin and committed 2 turnovers in the loss. Leading the way for the Blue Devils was QB Gunnar Holmberg who completed 16 of 23 passes for 174 yards, 7 & 1 TD.
On the season, Duke is averaging 25.0 ppg on 443.4 total yards per game (252.9 passing yds/g; 190.6 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Duke has been led by RB Mataeo Durant who has 1065 rushing yards & 9 TD on 210 carries while also hauling in 23 receptions for 236 yards & 2 TD. QB Gunnar Holmberg has completed 69.3% of his passes for 2034 yards, 7 TD, & 6 INT. The top receiving threats for the Blue Devils have been Jalon Calhoun (41 rec, 609 yards, 3 TD), Jake Bobo (59 rec, 608 yards, TD), Eli Pancol (12 rec, 170 yards), & Darrell Harding Jr. (10 rec, 123 yards).
Defensively, Duke is allowing their opponents to average 35.6 ppg on 491.8 total yards per game (308.0 passing yds/g; 183.8 rushing yds/g).
The Virginia Tech Hokies dropped to 4-5 on the season after being defeated by the Boston College Eagles, 17-3, on November 5th. Virginia Tech had no answers on the offensive end against the Boston College defense and could not fight back after a 3-yard TD run by the Eagles Pat Garwo III gave Boston College a 17-0 lead with 8:48 left in the 3rd quarter. Virginia Tech was outgained by Boston College by a 346-235 margin and lost the turnover battle by a 2-1 margin in the loss. Leading the way for the Hokies was Malachi Thomas who had 70 rushing yards on 13 carries.
On the season, Virginia Tech is averaging 21.7 ppg on 337.6 total yards per game (176.4 passing yds/g; 161.1 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Virginia Tech has been led by the RB duo of Raheem Blackshear (89 att, 425 yards, 4 TD; 17 rec, 183 yards) & Malachi Thomas (70 att, 372 yards, 3 TD). QB Braxton Burmeister has completed 54.1% of his passes for 1495 yards, 9 TD, & 3 INT while also rushing for 276 yards & 2 TD, however, is questionable for this matchup after suffering an upper body injury in the 1st half against Boston College. If Blackshear can’t go, Virginia Tech will go with Knox Kadum who completed 7 of 16 passes for 73 yards against Boston College. The leading receivers for the Hokies have been Tre Turner (34 rec, 602 yards, 2 TD), Tayvion Robinson (35 rec, 367 yards, 4 TD), & Kaleb Smith (16 rec, 179 yards).
Defensively, Virginia Tech is allowing their opponents to average 21.8 ppg on 375.6 total yards per game (190.7 passing yds/g; 184.9 rushing yds/g).
The Blue Devils are 11-3-1 ATS in their last 15 road games vs. a team with a losing home record, however, are just 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS loss. The Hokies are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games.
Virginia Tech certainly comes into this game with a bunch of question marks on the offensive end as both QB Braxton Burmeister and WR Tre Turner are questionable, however, they still have a solid rushing attack that should have no problem putting up points against a Duke defense that ranks 117th in scoring defense & 102nd in rushing defense. Duke has also struggled on the offensive end on the road, putting up just a combined 14 points over their last 3 road games and as I think this trend continues, I think the Hokies do enough on the offensive end to cover this double-digit home spread. Good Luck!
