The North Carolina Tar Heels and Pitt Panthers face off on Saturday in an ACC college football showdown at Heinz Field. When these two teams faced off in 2019 it was Pitt that came away with the 34-17 victory.
North Carolina comes into this game with a 5-4 record, but they are coming off a wild victory over Wake Forest. North Carolina was down big, but in the 4th quarter they outscored Wake Forest 24-7 and that led to the victory. Quarterback Sam Hartman threw for 398 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions. He also rushed for 78 yards and two touchdowns. North Carolina is averaging 38.9 points per game while their defense is giving up 33.4 points per game.
On the other side of this matchup is the Pitt Panthers who sit with a 7-2 record overall and they are coming off another big win. The offense was able to score 54 points against Duke and that led to a blowout victory. Pitt on the season is averaging 45 points while the defense is giving up 22.7 points per game. Kenny Pickett is under center for Pitt and he has thrown for 3,171 yards, 29 touchdowns, and three interceptions. Running back Israel Abanikanda has been the top player for Pitt rushing for 498 yards and five touchdowns. The offense is good, but in this game the defense is going to need to find a way to step up.
North Carolina is 2-6 against the spread in their last eight games overall. Pitt is 5-1 against the spread in their last six games. North Carolina is 5-2 against the spread in the last seven meetings. The over is 4-0 in the last four meetings. The over is 7-1 in North Carolina’s last eight games as a road underdog.
This is a higher total, but so was last week’s total for North Carolina and that game went way over the total. Neither of these defenses are all that great and I expect both offenses are going to finish with at least 40 points. This game is going to go way over the total. I would buy this number all the way up to 80 or 81 and still feel very comfortable.
