The Northern Illinois Huskies had their 5-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 6-3 on the season after being defeated by the Kent State Golden Flashes, 52-47, this past Wednesday. Northern Illinois had no answers defensively for the Kent State offense and could not fight back after a 36-yard TD reception by Nykeim Johnson gave the Golden Flashes a 45-27 lead late in the 3rd quarter. Northern Illinois was outgained by Kent State by a 682-663 margin and committed 1 turnover in the loss. The Cardinals are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games vs. a team with a winning home record and 14-3 ATS vs. a team with a winning record. The Huskies are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games following a ATS loss and 4-1-1 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
Ball State came into this season with high expectations and despite a slow start, the Cardinals have really found their rhythm as they have won 4 of their last 5 games and have won their last two meetings against Northern Illinois. Northern Illinois has been great this season, however, this is a team that can struggle defensively as on top of allowing Kent State to score 52 points last week, the Huskies come into this game ranked 117th in rushing defense & 87th in passing defense. Ball State has balanced offense that should have success in this game and as I think the Drew Plitt & Justin Hall combination is going to be too much for the Northern Illinois defense to handle, I’m taking Ball State to cover this small road spread.
