The Wake Forest Demon Deacons will travel to Chapel Hill to face the Tar Heels of North Carolina early on Saturday Morning. The Demon Deacons have yet to lose a game this season and are ranked in the top 10 for the first time in program history. Although both of these teams are in the ACC, this game will NOT count in the conference standings.
Wake Forest is coming off of a 38 point conference win against Duke. Quarterback Sam Hartman has been named ACC Quarterback of the Week the past two weeks. In last year's matchup, Hartman threw for 429 yards and four touchdowns on 29-45 and 0 interceptions.
Despite the dominance straight up, they are only 4-4 ATS on the year. The Demon Deacons are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog. With that one loss coming last season obviously. With this being counted as a non conference matchup, I look for the Demons to find motivation from the losing history they have in this matchup. The Demon Deacons are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 meetings in North Carolina and must change that if they look to win this one.
UNC is coming off of a 10 point loss to Notre Dame in which QB Sam Howell surpassed T.J. Yates to become North Carolina’s career-leader in passing yards. Last time he faced Wake he earned 571 yards of total offense.
North Carolina is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games and 3-5-0 against the spread this year. Although UNC made a 21 point comeback last year, this is a Wake Team that has bigger fish to fry in a potential college football playoff appearance.
Last year, this game went well over the total. The over is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings in North Carolina. The over is also 5-1 in Demon Deacons last 6 road games. I expect this to be a high scoring match up as the two teams combine to average 79.9 points per game, 3.9 more than the over/under in this one.
Wake Forest will need to win in order to enter the conversation for a College Football Playoff bid. That added to last year’s blunder is enough to motivate Wake to keep their perfect record. I think the wrong team is favored here. I’ll take Wake on the ML.
