Charlotte will play host to fellow Conference USA program, Rice. The Rice Owls have lost two of their last three games, while the Charlotte 49ers are 4-4 on the season.
After starting the season 0-3, Rice has won three of their last five. Rice is looking at a 7th consecutive year of sitting out bowl season. Last time out, QB Jake Constantine threw for 242 yards with two TDs and 0 INTs. Rice was almost able to win that game in overtime after tying it up with 16 seconds remaining. They would go on to lose on a TD run in overtime after they missed a field goal having the first possession.
Jordan Myers has been a brightspot as the TE leads the team in rushing with 316 yards and seven TDs while putting up 226 yards receiving and a TD. Unfortunately this team generates a ton of penalties and last game, they were penalized 15 times for 114 yards. The Owls are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog and this is likely due to their lack of discipline with the ball.
The 49ers are having injury issues that are impacting their offensive capabilities. Starting QB Chris Reynolds is still questionable with a hand injury. If he cannot go, James Foster will get his second start after he passed for 129 yards with no TD and an INT in his first.
Charlotte is 89th against the pass, 115th against the run, and 90th in points allowed at 29.6 ppg. This shouldn’t be much of a factor as Rice is such a poor team offensively.
The 49ers are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up loss and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games as a favorite. Without Reynolds, they will struggle to keep this up.
Rice is 122nd in the nation in points allowed at 36.5 ppg and they have surrendered 41.3 ppg on the road. This will be difficult for Charlotte if they have to go with their backup again. I see this one being close as both of these teams will struggle to score. Although the Owls are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall, this is won in which they have a chance. With the remainder of their schedule featuring teams like Western Kentucky, UTEP, and Louisiana Tech, this will be one of the last opportunities for Rice to be competitive. I’ll take the points with Rice to keep it close and possibly sneak away with the upset.
