In this matchup of Conference USA bottom feeders, the North Texas Mean Green will visit M.M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg, MS to take on the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. North Texas improved to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in the Conference USA after beating the Rice Owls in overtime. Southern Mississippi is 1-7 overall and 0-4 in the Conference and struggles horribly against the spread.
After earning their second win on the season, look for the Mean Green to come into this one with confidence. Austin Aune has passed for 972 yards with six touchdowns and six interceptions for the Mean Green. Last game, he completed 11 of 22 passes for 121 yards, adding 6 carries for 65 yards.
Although they struggle to pick up wins. North Texas is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. This is the first time this season that they are favored. That says more about how bad their opponent is and not about how good they are.
Speaking of the Golden Eagles, they are at the bottom of the Conference USA West standings. Not only are they 1-7 straight up, but they are also 1-7 against the spread. They lost to Rice earlier in the season (24-19) and haven’t fared well against weak competition.
Southern Mississippi Quarterback Jake Lange completed just 16 of 34 passes for 166 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions last time out. On the season, he’s only passed for 727 yards with four touchdowns and six interceptions. The backups even saw some time under center, and this team still couldn't get it going.
The Golden Eagles gained only 234 yards and committed five turnovers in a 24 point loss last week. Majority of the other team’s offense was gift wrapped by turnovers. Middle Tennessee scored a touchdown on a fumble, a blocked punt and a pick.
These are two really bad teams. The question is, who is worse. The clear answer is Southern Mississippi. The under is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings. I expect both teams to struggle to score and we will see the better team win. At less than a touchdown, I’ll take a shot with North Texas.
