The Houston Cougars will travel to Raymond James Stadium to take on the South Florida Bulls this Saturday night in College Football action.
The Houston Cougars won their 7th straight game and improved to 7-1 on the season after defeating the 19th ranked SMU Mustangs, 44-37, this past Saturday. Houston allowed SMU to fight back from an early 17-0 deficit to tie the game at 37-all with just :30 seconds left in the 4th quarter, however, the Cougars were able to pull off the dramatic victory on the ensuing kickoff as Marcus Jones scored the game-winning TD for the Cougars on a 100-yard kickoff return. Houston outgained SMU by a 489-355 margin and forced 1 SMU turnover in the victory. Leading the way for the Cougars was QB Clayton Tune who completed 27 of 37 passes for 412 yards & 4 TD.
On the season, Houston is averaging 37.3 ppg on 379.4 total yards per game (258.5 passing yds/g; 120.9 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Houston has been led by Clayton Tune who has completed 69.7% of his passes for 1839 yards, 16 TD, & 6 INT. The top receiving threats for the Cougars have been Nathaniel Dell (48 rec, 675 yards, 7 TD), Christian Trahan (27 rec, 301 yards, 2 TD), Jeremy Singleton (14 rec, 256 yards, 3 TD), & KeSean Carter (20 rec, 208 yards, TD). Leading the way for the Houston backfield has been the duo of Alton McCaskill (101 att, 478 yards, 9 TD) & Ta’Zhawn Henry (63 att, 230 yards, 4 TD).
Defensively, Houston is holding their opponents to an average of 19.8 ppg on 287.1 total yards per game (189.9 passing yds/g; 97.3 rushing yds/g).
The South Florida Bulls dropped to 2-6 on the season after being defeated by the East Carolina Pirates, 29-14, on October 28th. South Florida led by a 14-6 margin going into halftime, however, the Bulls struggled on both ends of the field in the 2nd half and could not fight back after a 31-yard pick-six by the Pirates Malik Fleming gave East Carolina a 19-14 lead with 2:38 left in the 3rd quarter. South Florida was outgained by East Carolina by a 471-391 margin and committed 4 turnovers in the loss. Leading the way for the Bulls was RB Kelley Joiner who had 103 rushing yards on 12 carries.
On the season, South Florida is averaging 22.6 ppg on 356.6 total yards per game (172.4 passing yds/g; 184.3 rushing yds/g). Offensively, South Florida has been led by RB Jaren Mangham who has completed 483 yards & 13 TD on 108 carries. QB Timmy McClain has completed 56.9% of his passes for 100 yards, 2 TD, & 2 INT. McClain missed the Bulls game against East Carolina due to an ankle injury, however, is currently listed as probable for this matchup. The top receiving threats for the Bulls have been Xavier Weaver (26 rec, 471 yards, 2 TD), Jimmy Horn Jr. (17 rec, 183 yards), Demarcus Gregory (9 rec, 147 yards, TD), & Omarion Dollison (15 rec, 136 yards).
Defensively, South Florida is allowing their opponents to average 31.9 ppg on 464.9 total yards per game (257.3 passing yds/g; 207.6 rushing yds/g).
The Cougars are 5-1 ATS vs. a team with a losing road record and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 road games. The Bulls are 11-1 ATS in their last 12 games following a ATS loss and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games.
South Florida has been decent at home this season in terms of ATS covers, however, I just don’t see the Bulls offense having a lot of success against a Houston defense that is allowed less than 20.0 ppg and has been outstanding against opposing rushing attacks, ranking 11th in rushing defense. Houston has really found their groove offensively as of late, averaging over 40.0 ppg over their last 4 games and as the Cougars have been solid ATS on the road this season, I think the Cougars win this one by 2 TD’s and cover this large road spread. Good Luck!
