The Purdue Boilermakers and Nebraska Cornhuskers face off on Saturday in a Big Ten college football showdown at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. When these two teams faced off in 2020, Nebraska came away with the 37-27 victory.
Purdue comes into this game with a 4-3 record overall and they have been really inconsistent. Two games ago, Purdue beat Iowa 24-7 in their most impressive victory of the season. In the last game against Wisconsin, the defense struggled giving up 30 points, and that led to the 17 point defeat. Under center for Purdue is Aidan O’Connell and he has thrown for 1,318 yards, seven touchdowns, and eight interceptions. One issue for this Purdue team is they haven’t had a consistent run game, which has made them very one-dimensional at times.
On the other side of this matchup is the Nebraska Cornhuskers who sit with a 3-5 record overall but they have lost two games in a row. In the last game against Minnesota, Nebraska was competitive, but they couldn’t get the job done late as they were defeated by seven points. The Cornhuskers are averaging 30.8 points while the defense is giving up 19.4 points per game. Under center for the Cornhuskers is Adrian Martinez and he has thrown for 1,995 yards, 10 touchdowns, and three interceptions, Martinez has also rushed for 433 yards and 10 touchdowns. One big issue for Martinez still is he seems to make one or two questionable plays a game.
Purdue is 9-3 against the spread in their last 12 games as an underdog. Nebraska is 1-3-1 against the spread in their last five games in conference. The underdog is 5-1-1 against the spread in the last seven meetings. The road team is 4-1 against the spread in the last five meetings.
I don’t fully trust Martinez, and he is going to make a couple of crucial mistakes in this one. I still think Nebraska will come away with the victory, but Purdue is going to keep this game close with a good game from O’Connell. Back Purdue to cover the spread.
