The Minnesota Golden Gophers and Northwestern Wildcats face off on Saturday in a Big Ten college football showdown at Ryan Field. When these two teams faced off in 2019, Northwestern lost 38-22. 

The Minnesota Golden Gophers come into this game with a 5-2 record overall and they have been playing some good football heading into this game. Minnesota over the last three games has beat Nebraska, Purdue, and Maryland. In the last game against Maryland the defense was strong giving up only 16 points, and that led to the victory. Minnesota is averaging 26.6 points while the defense is giving up 19.6 points. Minnesota is a run first team and even though they have lost their top two running backs, they have had others step up. Bucko Irving, Ky Thomas, and Bryce Williams are a three-headed monster out of the backfield and they will be leaned on heavily in this game. 

The Northwestern Wildcats sit with a 3-4 record overall and in the last game against Michigan they lost 33-7. In two of the last three games, Northwestern has scored only seven points. Northwestern is averaging 19.7 points while the defense is giving up 25.1 points per game. Under center for Northwestern is Ryan Hilinski and he has thrown for 759 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. The top running back has been Evan Hull and he has rushed for 643 yards and five touchdowns. If Northwestern wants to win this game, it’s going to need to be the offense that steps up and has a big game.

Minnesota is 5-0 against the spread in their last five road games. Northwestern is 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games overall. Minnesota is 7-2 against the spread in their last nine games in Northwestern. The under is 8-1 in the last nine meetings between the two teams. 

Minnesota’s defense has been impressive, and that will lockdown again in this game. Look for Northwestern to struggle to get to 10 points, and this game is going to get out of hand early.
