Florida State faces Clemson on Saturday, October 30th, at Memorial Stadium for a Week 9 ACC college football matchup.
Florida State is coming off a 59-3 win over UMass last week at home. Some call it a "cupcake week" for FSU, but nonetheless the Seminoles beat up on UMass in a game that was tough to watch. Florida State is now 3-4 on the year and 2-2 in ACC play this season. Florida State is on a three-game winning streak which includes impressive wins over Syracuse and North Carolina. Florida State has been able to run the football effectively all season, but that has been emphasized in the past four weeks. In those games, Florida State is earning 264 rushing yards per game and 6.6 yards per attempt on the ground. Florida State's defense on the year has allowed 389 total yards per game and 26 points per game. Florida State will look for another big road upset when it takes on a Clemson team that has seen better days.
Clemson is over .500 this year at 4-3, but it still has to be considered one of the worst seasons in recent memory for the Tigers, especially during the Dabo Swinney era. Clemson is 0-7 against the spread this year and lost to Pitt outright 27-17 on the road last weekend. Clemson is 3-2 in conference play, but the remaining schedule for the Tigers looks daunting. After this game with Florida State, Clemson then has to take on two high-powered offenses in Louisville and Wake Forest (with a convenient spot against UConn sandwiched in there). Clemson is scoring 20 points per game as the offense has not been good from the start. Quarterback DJ Uiagaleilei has failed to meet expectations and the Tigers have looked frustrated with the ball all year. Clemson's defense has been solid though, only allowing 15 points per game.
The last time these two teams faced each other was in 2019 when Clemson beat Florida State 45-14. It is important to remember that last year's game was canceled at the very last minute between these two teams, and Clemson's reaction to that cancellation was not too positive.
Clemson is a 9.5-point favorite and the total is set at 47.5. I know that Clemson is winless against the spread this year, but part of me thinks that this could be the game where the Tigers earn a resounding win at home. Clemson has been great against the run, which could be troublesome for a Florida State offense that has not been able to throw the football all year. Florida State's defense is inconsistent and if Clemson takes an early lead, the Seminoles could be in big trouble. I will take Clemson and lay the lumber here.
