The Duke Blue Devils and Wake Forest Demon Deacons face off on Saturday in an ACC college football showdown at BB&T Field. When these two teams faced off in 2019, Wake Forest came away with the 39-27 victory.
Duke has struggled this season sitting with a 3-4 record overall and in their last game against Virginia they lost 48-0. Duke has lost three games in a row including against Georgia Tech and North Carolina. Duke is averaging 27 points while the defense is giving up 31.6 points per game. Under center for the Blue Devils is Gunnar Holmberg and he has thrown for 1750 yards, six touchdowns, and six interceptions. Mataeo Durant has rushed 166 times for 870 yards and nine touchdowns.
On the other side of this matchup is the Wake Forest Demon Deacons and they might be the ACC’s only hope to make the college football playoff. Wake Forest has a perfect 7-0 record but against the spread they are 3-4. In the last game against Wake Forest, the defense really struggled, but the offense made up for it as they won 70-56. Quarterback Sam Hartman had a big game completing 23 of his 29 passes for 458 yards and five touchdowns. Wake Forest is averaging 43.1 points while the defense is giving up 26.3 points per game. Hartman has thrown for 2,073 yards, 19 touchdowns, and three interceptions. Christian Beal-Smith has also had a big year rushing for 446 yards and six touchdowns.
Duke is 0-6 against the spread in their last six road games. Wake Forest is 2-6 against the spread in their last eight games overall. The over is 9-4 in the last 13 meetings. The road team is 4-1 against the spread in the last five meetings.
Wake Forest can score, but their defense has also been an issue, and there will be no shortage of scoring in this game. Look for Wake Forest to run up the score, Duke will also score plenty, and the over will cash. In terms of the side, it’s a lean with Duke to keep it close and cover the spread, but the better play is with the total.
