The Illinois Fighting Illini and Penn State Nittany Lions face off on Saturday in a Big Ten college football showdown at Beaver Stadium. When these two teams faced off in 2020, It was Penn State that came away with the 56-21 victory.
The Illinois are going through a rebuild and they have struggled this season sitting with a 2-5 record overall. The Illinois offense has been the biggest issue, and in two of the last three games they have scored nine runs or less. In the last game against Wisconsin, the offense couldn’t even get on the board scoring zero points. The Fighting Illini are averaging only 17.7 points while the defense is giving up 24.6 points. One of the big questions heading into this game is the status of Brandon Peters who left the last game with an injury. If he can’t go, it will be Artur Sitkowski who has thrown for 666 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception.
On the other side of this matchup is the Penn State Nittany Lions who sit with a 5-1 record overall, and their loss was by three points in the last game against Iowa. Penn State was up 17-3 at halftime, but Sean Clifford went down with an injury. Clifford is still dealing with an injury, and if he can’t go it will either be Ta’Quan Roberson or Christian Veilleux who gets the start. Penn State is averaging 28.3 points while the defense is giving up 13.8 points per game. In this game no matter who starts under center, Penn State needs to have a strong running game.
Illinois is 1-4 against the spread in their last five games on grass. Penn State is 6-1 against the spread in their last seven conference games. The under is 5-1 in Illinois last six games in October. The road team is 11-4 against the spread in the last 15 meetings played between Illinois and Penn State.
It doesn’t matter who starts under center for Penn State, this is going to be a low-scoring game. Illinois is a terrible offensive team, and they are going to struggle to score again in this game. Penn State also doesn’t have an elite offense and I don’t see them reaching more than 24 or 27 points. Back the under to cash.
