East Carolina faces Houston on Saturday, October 23rd, at TDECU Stadium for a Week 8 AAC college football matchup.
East Carolina is coming off its bye week in Week 7, giving the Pirates plenty of time to travel into Houston. East Carolina's last game was against AAC-rival UCF in which ECU lost 20-16 on the road. East Carolina and UCF were nearly identical in the total yardage department (360-359 ECU), but the difference-maker in that game was the 3-1 turnover ratio in which East Carolina lost two fumbles and an interception. East Carolina is +3 in turnovers this season, but coughing up the football at all against this Houston team has been proven to be bad news for fellow AAC opponents. East Carolina's offense has done well on the year, scoring 30 points per game and earning over 430 total yards per game. The defense has been inconsistent, allowing 28 points per game and over 450 total yards per game.
Houston is rolling in after its bye week as well. Houston has a ton of confidence heading into this matchup after defeating Navy, Tulsa, and Tulane in conference play. With a 5-1 record and a 3-0 conference record, Houston looks to continue to dominate in AAC play. Houston is led by quarterback Clayton Tune who has had himself a successful season for the Cougars. Tune has completed 69.7% of his passes for 1,258 passing yards, 10 passing touchdowns, and six interceptions. The numbers may not jump off of the page, but Tune has quietly been the biggest reason for the Cougs' success in 2021-22. As a team, Houston is scoring 37 points per game under Dana Holgorsen while holding its opponents to 16 points per game and 263 total yards of offense as well. This has clearly been the best defensive year for Holgorsen's Cougars since he joined the team three years ago.
Houston is a 13.5-point favorite and the total is set at 57.5. I think Houston wins this game rather comfortably, but I still believe that this is a case of too many points. East Carolina has proven to be dangerous offensively and I think the Pirates compete in the passing game on the road here. Holton Ahlers is not the flashiest QB in the country but I expect a solid performance from him and ECU here to keep this one within two touchdowns.
