Clemson faces Pittsburgh on Saturday, October 23rd, at Heinz Field for a Week 8 ACC college football matchup.
Clemson is an underdog in an ACC regular season game for the first time since 2016 when it took on Lamar Jackson's Louisville team. Clemson is 4-2 overall this season with a 0-6 against the spread record heading into this matchup with Pitt. This has been a season to forget for Dabo Swinney and the Tigers. Offensively, Clemson has struggled since Week 1, only scoring 21 points per game and earning 322 total yards per game. When you compare that to last year's 44 points per game and 502 yards of offense per contest, you see just how different this year's Clemson team has been. Quarterback D.J. Uiagaleilei has not lived up to the hype and overall, Clemson is in a bad spot on the road against a volatile team like Pittsburgh. Clemson's defensive numbers are what you would expect, only allowing 13 points per game and 317 total yards per game.
Pittsburgh will look to defeat Clemson for the first time since 2016, and this time the Panthers are at home. Pittsburgh is 5-1 on the year and 5-1 against the spread as well. Pittsburgh has relied on its star quarterback in Kenny Pickett, who has thrown for almost 2,000 yards passing, 21 passing touchdowns, and only has one interception on the year. Pittsburgh is scoring 48 points per game this season and the defense has also held up, allowing only 20 points per game and 319 total yards per game. Pittsburgh's lone loss this season was an upset loss to Western Michigan at home. Since that loss, Pittsburgh is 3-0 and has two wins over ACC teams in Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech, both on the road.
Pittsburgh is a 3-point favorite and the total is set at 48. This line looks like a trap as I think Pittsburgh deserves to be a 7-point favorite at home. They can trap me all they want, as I have to take Pittsburgh or pass. Pitt's offense should be too much for Clemson to handle here and although this game will be low-scoring more than likely, when the going gets tough I like Kenny Pickett and the home crowd to carry Pitt to victory. I will lay the points with the Pitt Panthers.
