The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers will travel to S. B. Ballard Stadium to take on the Old Dominion Monarchs this Saturday afternoon in College Football action.
The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers lost their 4th straight game and dropped to 1-4 on the season after being defeated by the UTSA Roadrunners, 52-46, this past Saturday. In a back-and-forth game that featured over 1100 yards of offense, Western Kentucky could not fight back after a 43-yard TD reception by the Roadrunners De’Corian Clark gave UTSA a 52-43 lead with 6:39 left in regulation. Western Kentucky outgained UTSA by a 670-564 margin, however, did commit 2 turnovers in the loss. Leading the way for the Hilltoppers was QB Bailey Zappe who completed 38 of 60 passes for 523 yards, 5 TD, & 1 INT.
On the season, Western Kentucky is averaging 40.4 ppg on 550.4 total yards per game (457.8 passing yds/g; 92.6 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Western Kentucky has been led by QB Bailey Zappe who has completed 70.4% of his passes for 2235 yards, 21 TD, & 3 INT. The top receiving threats for the Hilltoppers and Zappe have been Jerreth Sterns (56 rec, 741 yards, 7 TD), Mitchell Tinsley (26 rec, 448 yards, 3 TD), Malachi Corley (29 rec, 286 yards, 3 TD), & Daewood Davis (11 rec, 239 yards, 2 TD). Leading the way for the Hilltoppers backfield has been the duo of Adam Cofield (35 att, 162 yards, 3 TD) & Noah Whittington (29 att, 160 yards).
Defensively, Western Kentucky is allowing their opponents to average 38.4 ppg on 480.4 total yards per game (268.8 passing yds/g; 211.6 rushing yds/g).
The Old Dominion Monarchs lost their 4th straight game and dropped to 5-1 on the season after being defeated by the Marshall Thundering Herd, 20-13 in OT, this past Saturday. Old Dominion looked like they were going to score the upset victory, however, Marshall was able to tie it up with just :33 seconds left on a 52-yard TD reception by Willie Johnson and could not answer Marshall’s TD in OT. Old Dominion was outgained by Marshall by a 390-314 margin and committed 2 turnovers in the loss. Leading the way for the Monarchs was RB Blake Watson who has 168 rushing yards on 26 carries.
On the season, Old Dominion is averaging 23.7 ppg on 345.7% shooting from the field. Offensively, Old Dominion has been led by the RB duo of Blake Watson (67 att, 339 yards, 1 TD) & Elijah Davis (50 att, 278 yards, 2 TD). QB D.J. Mack Jr. has completed 51.5% of his passes for 856 yards, 5 TD, & 7 INT while also rushing for 177 yards & 6 TD’s. The top receiving threats for the Monarchs have been Zack Kuntz (27 rec, 262 yards, 2 TD), Ali Jennings III (15 rec, 208 yards, 2 TD), Stone Smartt (12 rec, 117 yards), & Isaiah Spencer (10 rec, 97 yards, 2 TD).
Defensively, Old Dominion is allowing their opponents to average 29.5 ppg on 330.5 total yards per game (199.0 passing yds/g; 131.5 rushing yds/g).
The Hilltoppers are 8-3 ATS vs. a team with a losing record and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing more than 450 total yards in their previous game. The Monarchs are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 conference games and just 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS win.
Old Dominion has been playing better than I expected so far this year, however, this still is not a very good football team and it’s going to be extremely difficult for the Monarchs offense to keep up with Bailey Zappe and the Hilltoppers top-ranked passing attack. Western Kentucky has struggled a bit on the defense end, however, I think Old Dominion is going to have a hard time bouncing back from a heart-breaking loss against Marshall and as I believe the Hilltoppers have no trouble putting up 40+ points in this one, I think they do enough to win this one by at least 2 TD’s and cover this spread.
