The Vanderbilt Commodores and South Carolina Gamecocks face off on Saturday in an SEC college football showdown at Williams-Brice Stadium. When these two teams faced off in 2020, South Carolina won 41-7.
Vanderbilt is having another down season sitting with a 2-4 record overall. The two wins for Vanderbilt came against Colorado State and UConn. In the last game against Florida the offense couldn’t get anything going, and the defense gave up 42 points. Starting quarterback Ken Seals completed 22 of his 43 passes for 192 yards, zero touchdowns, and two interceptions. Vanderbilt is averaging 13.3 points while the defense is giving up 36.17 points per game. Seals on the season has thrown for 1,086 yards, five touchdowns, and seven interceptions. The interceptions have been an issue for Seals, and he can’t be turning the ball over in this game.
On the other side of this matchup is the South Carolina Gamecocks who sit with a 3-3 record but when they have lost, it’s usually been ugly. In the last game against Tennessee, the defense really struggled giving up 45 points, and that led to the 25 point loss. Two games ago against Troy, South Carolina won 23-14. South Carolina on the season is averaging 22 points while the defense is giving up 22 points. Under center is Luke Doty and he has thrown for 733 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. This is a game that South Carolina feels like they should win big, and the defense is going to need to be good in this game.
Vanderbilt is 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games as a road underdog. South Carolina is 3-8-1 against the spread in their last 12 games overall. The road team is 3-1-1 against the spread in the last five meetings. The under is 9-4-1 in the last 14 meetings.
There is no doubt that South Carolina is the better team, but I don’t feel comfortable laying this type of number with them. This has been a series dominated by the road team, and at times this season, Vanderbilt’s offense has been decent. I don’t trust South Carolina to create those turnovers against Seals, and he will get the job done. Back Vanderbilt against the spread.
