Troy faces Texas State on Saturday, October 16th, at Jim Wacker Field at Bobcat Stadium for a Sun Belt college football matchup.
Troy earned its first conference win of the season in its 27-24 victory over Georgia Southern at home. Troy snapped its two-game losing streak with the win and moved to 3-3 on the year. It has been a strange season for Troy, to say the least. After competing with teams like Liberty and beating a tough Southern Miss team, Troy was upset by one of the worst teams in FBS college football, ULM. Troy was a huge favorite in that game and somehow lost it outright. Now Troy has to be feeling good after competing with South Carolina and then beating Georgia Southern. Troy's defense has been tenacious this season, forcing sacks on 17.8% of its opponents' passing plays. Troy only allows 272 total yards of offense per game and 18 points per game, as the Trojans have relied heavily on their strong defensive play.
Texas State is also coming off its first conference win of the season in its first conference game against South Alabama. Texas State won the game by the final score of 33-31, moving the Bobcats to 2-3 on the year overall. Texas State has scored 26 points per game and has run the ball a lot this season. Texas State averages 40 rushing attempts per game for 151 rushing yards per game, which is good for 3.8 yards per attempt. Texas State's defense has struggled so far this season, allowing 36 points per game. Texas State is only a game removed from what happened against Eastern Michigan in which EMU scored 59 points in a 59-21 beatdown of Texas State. Texas State was also upset to an FCS team the game before in Incarnate Word, 42-34.
Troy is a 7.5-point favorite and the total is set at 48. Here we have a mix of styles and I think Troy has a clear advantage. Troy has been great against the run and should be able to put a lot of pressure on Brady McBride often. Texas State's defense has been bad against the run and pass, and I think Troy takes advantage of good field position throughout the game. I will lay the points with the road favorite here.
