The Purdue Boilermakers and Iowa Hawkeyes face off on Saturday in a Big Ten college football showdown at Kinnick Stadium. When these two teams faced off in October of 2020, Purdue won 24-20.
Purdue comes into this game with a 3-2 record overall, but they are coming off a very disappointing loss. Two games ago against Minnesota, the Purdue offense could only manage 13 points, and that led to the loss. Two games ago against Illinois, Purdue also only scored 13 points, but they won that game by four points. The Boilermakers are averaging 23.6 points while the defense is giving up 15.4 points. Aidan O’Connell is under center for Purdue and he has thrown for 743 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions. At times interceptions have been an issue, but in the last game he threw for one touchdown, and one interception. He is facing a good defense in this game, and he can’t be turning the ball over.
On the other side of this matchup is the Iowa Hawkeyes who sit with a perfect 6-0 record and they have covered five of the six spreads. At halftime of the last game, Iowa was down 17-10 to Penn State, but it was a big second half, especially with the defense that led to the 23-20 victory. Iowa is averaging 31.5 points while the defense is giving up 13 points. This is a defense first team, but the offense has played really well too. Spencer Petras is under center and he has thrown for 1.138 yards, nine touchdowns, and two interceptions. Running back Tyler Goodson has rushed for 518 yards and five touchdowns.
The under is 6-0 in Purdue’s last six games overall. The under is 5-1 in Iowa’s last six home games. The road team is 9-2 against the spread in the last 11 meetings between the two teams. Purdue is 4-0 against the spread in the last four meetings.
The trends point towards the under, and I expect both defenses are going to really lockdown in this game. Look for Iowa’s defense to really lockdown, and I also expect Purdue will slow down the Hawkeyes offense. Back the under to cash.
