The Nebraska Cornhuskers and Minnesota Golden Gophers face off on Saturday in a Big Ten college football showdown at TCF Bank Stadium. When these two teams faced off in December of 2020, Minnesota won 24-17.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers sit with a 3-4 record overall, but maybe this team is just about to turn the corner. If that is going to be the case though, this is a must-win game. Nebraska has played competitively against Oklahoma, almost beat Michigan, and took Michigan State to overtime. In the last game against Michigan, it was once again a key mistake by Adrian Martinez that cost Nebraska the victory. Nebraska is averaging 31.8 points while the defense is giving up 17.8 points. Martinez has thrown for 1,754 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions. He has also rushed for 450 yards and ten touchdowns. In this game Martinez needs to make the right play, and not have one of those late turnovers that have cost the team.
On the other side of this matchup is Minnesota who has been inconsistent this season, but they are coming off a seven-point victory over Purdue. This is a team earlier this season that also played competitively against Ohio State. Minnesota is averaging 24.4 points while the defense is giving up 19.6 points. One big issue for this Minnesota team has been the injuries. Trey Potts and Mohamed Ibraham, the two top running backs have been lost for the season. Mar'Keise Irving and Ky Irving are young but have both played roles this season, and those roles are going to now increase. Quarterback Tanner Morgan has thrown for 709 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions.
Nebraska is 4-1-1 against the spread in their last six games overall. Minnesota is 5-2-1 against the spread in their last eight games overall. Nebraska is 1-3-1 against the spread in the last five meetings. The home team is 3-1-1 in the last five meetings.
I know Nebraska has looked good, but they now go on the road and a tough environment in Minnesota. Look for Morgan to have a big game, and some of the younger running backs to have success. This has been a series that has been dominated by the home team, and that is going to continue in this game. Back Minnesota against the spread.
