Liberty faces UL-Monroe (ULM) on Saturday, October 16th, at JPS Field at James L. Malone Stadium for a Week 7 college football matchup.
Liberty is coming off a blowout victory over the C-USA's Middle Tennessee in a 41-13 Flames win. Liberty has now won two straight games after its lone loss to Syracuse in the Carrier Dome a few weeks back. Liberty is 5-1 on the year and has scored 35 points per game this season. A lot of that offensive success stems from the elite quarterback play of Malik Willis. Willis has a 68% completion percentage for 1,327 passing yards, 13 passing touchdowns, and only three interceptions. Willis has also added nearly 500 yards rushing, as he is the team's leading rusher by far. Liberty's defense has also impressed this season, allowing only 14 points per game and holding teams to 17 or fewer points in every game except one (Syracuse).
ULM was defeated by its conference rival in Georgia State last week by the final score of 55-21. It was an ugly game for the Warhawks, as penalties, turnovers, and plenty of mistakes fueled the blowout loss. ULM was a 16-point underdog in that one, therefore the Warhawks were not able to cover and are now 1-3-1 against the spread this season. ULM was forced to play Chandler Rogers at quarterback last week due to starter Rhett Rodriguez's injury. ULM has only managed to score 16 points per game this season on a measly 238 total yards of offense per contest. ULM's defense has gotten torched recently, allowing 59 points to Coastal Carolina and 55 last week against Georgia State. ULM will look to be competitive against another tough opponent, but luckily this is not a conference game for ULM.
Liberty is a 32.5-point favorite and the total is set at 56.5. For me, this is a Liberty or pass spot. Liberty has been and will be the much better team on Saturday, but 32.5 points are a lot to lay on the road. I cannot take ULM, even at home, as the Warhawks have shown me nothing in these past two weeks on both sides of the ball. Liberty may pull its starters if the game gets out of hand early, but I still like the Flames' chances to cover with the backups in.
Ron’s Pick Liberty -32.5
