Bowling Green faces Northern Illinois on Saturday, October 16th, at Brigham Field at Huskie Stadium for a MAC college football matchup.
After upsetting Minnesota on the road a few weeks back, Bowling Green has lost its last two games in conference play to move to 2-4 on the year and 0-2 in the MAC. Bowling Green was not expected to do much this season, but upsetting Minnesota definitely turned some heads Bowling Green's way. Bowling Green's offense still has some work to do, as it is only scoring 18 points per game and has really struggled to run the ball. Bowling Green is averaging a measly two yards per carry and only earning 57 rushing yards per game. Bowling Green's defense has been what has kept it competitive this season, albeit it struggled last week against Akron. On the year, Bowling Green is allowing 24 points per game and only 166 passing yards per game. Bowling Green will look for more upset magic on the road in this important conference battle.
Northern Illinois defeated Toledo by the final score of 22-20 last week as a double-digit underdog. NIU is now 2-0 in conference play and 4-2 on the year overall after winning three straight games. NIU has relied on its very strong ground game this season, earning 225 rushing yards per contest this season. NIU's Harrison Waylee has 101 rushing attempts for 574 rushing yards (5.7 yards per carry) and four touchdowns. Quarterback, Rocky Lombardi, has 320 rushing yards himself for four rushing touchdowns as well. Lombardi has not had the best season in terms of passing, but this NIU offense is still scoring 28 points per game. NIU's defense has been inconsistent but strong as of late, allowing less than 400 yards and exactly 20 points in each of its last two games.
Northern Illinois is a 9-point favorite and the total is set at 45. We have seen teams run on Bowling Green before, just as Tennessee and Kent State did in their wins. I think Northern Illinois' success in the run game is too much for Bowling Green here. I think we are getting a bettable price with Northern Illinois because of what Bowling Green did to Minnesota, but I still do not think Bowling Green is a top-tier MAC program at the moment. I will lay the points with the home team.
