The Navy Midshipmen will travel to Liberty Bowl memorial Stadium to take on the Memphis Tigers this Thursday night in College Football action.

The Navy Midshipmen dropped to 1-4 on the season after being defeated by the 24th ranked SMU Mustangs, 31-24, this past Saturday. Navy gave SMU all they could handle and tied the game late in the 3rd quarter, however, the offense struggled late and couldn’t fight back after a 22-yd TD reception by the Mustangs Jordan Kerley gave SMU the lead for good with 8:19 left in regulation. Navy won the turnover battle by a 2-0 margin, however, the Midshipmen were outgained by Navy by a 404-241 margin in the loss. Leading the way for the Midshipmen was QB Tai Lavatai who completed 4 of 7 passes for 64 yards & 1 TD while also rushing for 53 yards.

On the season, Navy is averaging 17.6 ppg on 281.6 total yards per game (62.6 passing yds/g; 219.0 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Navy is run-first offense that comes into this game ranked 19th in College Football in rushing offense. Leading the way for the Navy rushing attack has been FB Isaac Ruoss (61 att, 233 yards, 2 TD), FB James Harris II (47 att, 214 yards), QB Xavier Arline (51 att, 171 yards, 2 TD), Carlinos Acie (21 att, 139 yards), & QB Tai Lavatai (61 att, 128 yards, 2 TD). QB Tai Lavatai (7 of 17, 130 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) started and played the entire game last week while QB Xavier Arline (5 of 14, 109 yards) didn’t see the field. The top receiving threats for the Midshipmen have been Mychal Cooper who has 6 receptions for 128 yards.

Defensively, Navy is allowing their opponents to average 32.2 ppg on 360.6 total yards per game (234.2 passing yds/g; 126.4 rushing yds/g).

The Memphis Tigers lost their 3rd straight game and dropped to 3-3 on the season after being defeated by the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, 35-29, this past Saturday. Memphis was outstanding on the offensive end against Tulsa, however, struggled with turnovers and could not fight back after a 44-yard TD run by Tulsa’s Anthony Watkins gave the Golden Hurricane a 35-21 lead with 4:28 left in regulation. Memphis outgained Tulsa by a 614-417 margin, however, lost the turnover battle by a 3-0 margin in the loss. Leading the way for the Tigers was WR Calvin Austin III who had 13 receptions for 200 yards & 1 TD.

On the season, Memphis is averaging 36.3 ppg on 499.0 total yards per game (323.0 passing yds/g; 176.0 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Memphis has been led by WR Calvin Austin III who has 48 receptions for 837 yards & 8 TD’s. QB Seth Henigan has completed 60.5% of his passes for 1938 yards, 14 TD, & 3 INT. The other top receivers outside of Austin III have been Sean Dykes (26 rec, 438 yards, 4 TD), & Javon Ivory (16 rec, 266 yards, 2 TD). Leading the way for the Tigers backfield has been the duo of Brandon Thomas (92 att, 586 yards, 6 TD) & Rodrigues Clark (42 att, 283 yards, 3 TD).

Defensively, Memphis is allowing their opponents to average 32.7 ppg on 457.0 total yards per game (316.3 passing yds/g; 140.7 rushing yds/g).

The Midshipmen are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 conference games and 9-4-1 ATS in their last 14 games following a straight up loss. The Tigers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games, however, are just 1-7 ATS in their last 8 conference games.

Navy comes into this game with just a 1-4 record, however, the Midshipmen have looked much better as of late as after coming back to defeat UCF, they gave a very good SMU team a run for their money. Memphis has been outstanding offensively this season, however, the defense has really struggled as of late, allowing 30+ points in each of their last three losses. Memphis offense should have success in this one, however, Navy has been putting points on the board the last two games compared to what we saw earlier this season and as I think this is just too many points for Memphis to cover, I’m rolling with Navy and the double-digit points in this one. Good Luck!
