UTEP faces Southern Miss on Saturday, October 9th, at M. M. Roberts Stadium for a Week 6 Conference-USA college football matchup.
UTEP is coming off a 28-21 win over Old Dominion in Week 5 of the season. UTEP is now 4-1 on the year and 1-0 in conference play with the victory. UTEP is also 3-2 against the spread this season after covering the 5.5-point spread last week. UTEP's offense has made big improvements since the 2020 season. UTEP is scoring 26 points per game and earning 387 total yards per contest as well. UTEP is led by quarterback, Gavin Hardison. Hardison has a 58% completion percentage for 1139 passing yards, eight passing touchdowns, and five interceptions. UTEP's defense has held up really well on the year, allowing 24 points per game and only 311 total yards per contest as well. Last year, UTEP went 3-5 and it was a disappointing season overall. Now at 4-1, UTEP is ready to take the next step in the Conference-USA.
Southern Miss was defeated by a conference opponent in Rice last week, 24-19. Southern Miss' offensive woes continued as the team scored less than 20 points for the fourth time this season. Southern Miss is averaging 17 points per game, and that number is on the high side when you consider that Southern Miss scored 37 points against the FCS' Grambling State. Southern Miss is only earning 289 yards per game and has really struggled to run the ball. Earning 2.9 yards per attempt on the year, Southern Miss will have to find a rhythm on offense if the Golden Eagles want to pull off the upset this week. Southern Miss' defense has held up very well on the year, allowing 28 points per game (and that is with a 63-14 loss to Alabama) and 335 yards per game as well. Southern Miss has been good against the run and the secondary has been about average in terms of yards allowed.
UTEP is a two-point favorite and the total is set at 44.5. I like the way Southern Miss' defense has looked on the year, but its offensive inabilities concern me. UTEP's offense is in a much better spot at this point in the season and the defense has not been miserable. I will take the more consistent team in UTEP here.
