The SMU Mustangs and Navy Midshipmen face off on Saturday in a Week 6 college football showdown at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. When these two teams faced off in October of 2020, SMU came away with the 51-37.
SMU hasn’t been getting enough attention for what they have done this season sitting with a 5-0 record. Two games ago against TCU, SMU was able to win 42-34. This is a team that leans on their offense and they are currently averaging 42.6 points per game which is 7th best in college football. On defense this year, SMU is giving up 21.8 points. Under center for SMU is Tanner Mordecai and he has thrown for 1,569 yards, 24 touchdowns, and six interceptions. They also have a strong running game with four players going over 100 yards. Ulysses Bently IV has been the top player for SMU rushing for 403 yards and two touchdowns.
On the other side of this matchup is Navy who sits with a 1-3 record, but they are coming off quite the victory. Navy put up 34 points against UCF, and that was enough to get their first win of the season. For the most part, Navy’s offense has been an issue and a few games ago they only scored three points against Air Force. Navy is averaging only 16 points per game while the defense is giving up 32.5 points. They run the option attack and are averaging over 230 yards per game on the ground. Four different players have rushed for over 100 yards and the top has been Isaac Ruoss who has rushed for 211 yards and two touchdowns. In this game, if Navy wants to win it’s going to need to be the defense that locks down.
SMU is 3-9 against the spread in their last 12 road games. Navy is 15-5 in the last 20 conference games. SMU is 0-5 against the spread in their last five meetings in Navy. The over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
The trends point towards Navy, but I just don’t trust their offense to keep this game close. SMU is going to score at least 42 points, and that is going to be the difference as the Mustangs come away with a cover of the spread.
