The San Jose State Spartans will travel to Canvas Stadium to take on the Colorado State Rams this Saturday afternoon in College Football action.
The San Jose State Spartans improved to 3-2 on the season after defeating the New Mexico State Aggies, 37-31, this past Saturday night. San Jose State was solid on the offensive end against the Aggies and was able to hand on for the victory after a 1-yard TD reception by a Kairee Robinson gave the Spartans a 37-28 lead with just 5:49 left in regulation. San Jose State outgained New Mexico State by a 402-386 margin and forced 1 turnover in the victory. Leading the way for the Spartans was QB Nick Nash who completed 15 of 18 passes for 193 yards & 3 TD’s.
On the season, San Jose State is averaging 21.8 ppg on 346.2 total yards per game (241.0 passing yds/g; 105.2 rushing yds/g). Offensively, QB Nick Starkel (50.4 Comp %, 992 yards, 6 TD, 5 INT) missed the Spartans last game due to an arm injury and is currently questionable for this matchup. Nick Nash was impressive in relief against New Mexico State, however, has only one CFB start coming into this game if Starkel can’t go. The top receiving threats for the Spartans have been Derrick Deese Jr. (15 rec, 282 yards, 2 TD), Isaiah Hamilton (17 rec, 222 yards, TD), Charles Ross (12 rec, 156 yards, TD), & Jermaine Braddock (7 rec, 120 yards, 2 TD).
Defensively, San Jose State is holding their opponents to an average of 22.2 ppg on 353.6 total yards per game (227.4 passing yds/g; 126.2 rushing yds/g).
The Colorado State Rams dropped to 1-3 on the season after being defeated by the 5th ranked Iowa Hawkeyes, 24-14, on September 25th. Colorado State gave Iowa all they could handle and led by a 14-7 margin at halftime, however, the Rams offense could not fight the scoreboard in the 2nd half and Iowa was able to take the lead for good on a 27-yard TD reception by Sam LaPorta with 6:01 left in the 3rd quarter. Colorado State was outgained by Iowa by a 278-250 margin and forced 1 turnover in the loss. Leading the way for the Rams was QB Todd Centeio who completed 16 of 30 passes for 155 yards & 1 TD while also rushing for a TD.
On the season, Colorado State is averaging 20.0 ppg on 369.0 total yards per game (210.3 passing yds/g; 158.8 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Colorado State has been led by TE Trey McBride who has 36 receptions for 398 yards & 1 TD. QB Todd Centeio has completed 55.5% of his passes for 807 yards, 4 TD, & 1 INT while also rushing for 166 yards & 1 TD. The other top receivers for the Rams have been Dante Wright (10 rec, 146 yards) & E.J. Scott (8 rec, 98 yards). Leading the way for the Rams rushing attack has been RB David Bailey who had 260 rushing yards & 1 TD on 65 carries while also hauling in 7 receptions for 63 yards & 2 TD’s.
Defensively, Colorado State is allowing their opponents to average 24.0 ppg on 344.3 total yards per game (239.0 passing yds/g; 105.3 rushing yds/g).
The Spartans are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 road games vs. a team with a losing home record and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The Rams are 13-5 ATS in their last 18 home games vs. a team with a winning road record and 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 games after accumulating less than 275 total yards in their previous game.
San Jose State is coming off a great season last year, however, the offense has really struggled this season and it’s a bit concerning that the Spartans lost by 20 points to Western Michigan prior to barley being able to defeat the 1-5 New Mexico State Aggies. Colorado State struggled to start the season, however, has looked solid in their last two games against Toledo & Iowa, and as I think they have enough offensive weapons in Trey McBride, Todd Centeio, & David Bailey to have some success at home, I think the Rams do enough in this one to cover this small spread. Good Luck!
