The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Virginia Tech Hokies face off on Saturday in a non-conference showdown at Lane Stadium. When these two teams faced off in 2019, Notre Dame won 21-20.
Notre Dame comes into this game with a 4-1 record overall but their playoff hopes might be dead with their last game. Against Cincinnati, the offense really struggled scoring only 13 points, and that led to the 11 point defeat. The big question heading into this game for Notre Dame is who will be under center. Brian Kelly said he won’t reveal his starter before the game but it will be Jack Coan, Drew Pyne, or Tyler Buchner who gets the start. Notre Dame is averaging 30.8 points while the defense is giving up 23.4 points per game. Whoever does get the start, is going to need to find some more offensive success.
On the other side of this matchup is the Virginia Tech Hokies who sit with a 3-1 record and the only loss came against West Virginia. To open the season, Virginia Tech held North Carolina to only ten points. Virginia Tech is averaging 23.5 points while the defense is giving up 15.2 points. Under center for Virginia Tech is Braxton Burmeister and he has thrown for 746 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception. The Hokies don’t really have a star running back but three different players have rushed for over 100 yards. In this game, Virginia Tech needs to get out to a fast start and keep the crowd engaged early.
Notre Dame is 1-6 against the spread in their last seven games in October. Virginia is 1-4 against the spread in their last five non-conference games. The under is 6-0 in Virginia Tech’s last six games overall.
Nighttime in Blacksburg is bad news for Notre Dame. I don’t trust the Fighting Irish quarterback situation and their offense is going to really struggle. Virginia Tech might only score 20 or 24 points, but that will be enough to get the job done. Back Virginia Tech against the spread.
