The Northern Illinois Huskies and Toledo Rockets face off on Saturday in a MAC college football showdown at the Glass Bowl. In December of 2020, Toledo came away with the 41-24 victory.
The Toledo Rockets have an odd season and they currently sit with a 3-2 record. This is a team that lost to Notre Dame by three points, but they followed that up with a 22-6 loss to a terrible Colorado State team. In the last game against UMass, Toledo played their best game of the season winning 45-7. They are averaging 30.2 points while their defense is giving up 16.6. Toledo is a run first team and three players have rushed for at least 135 yards. The top rusher has been Bryant Koback who has rushed 76 times for 364 yards and four touchdowns. The offense will need to be good of course, but it’s going to be even more important that the defense steps up in this game.
On the other side of this matchup is the Northern Illinois Huskies who sit with a 3-2 record and they have a win over Georgia Tech this season. In the last game against Eastern Michigan, they had a big first half outsourcing the Eagles 17-3 and that paced them to a victory. The Huskies are averaging 28.6 points while their defense has given up 33.6 points per game. The Huskies are a run first team averaging 221 yards per game on the ground. The top back has been Harrison Waylee and he has rushed 101 times for 574 yards and 75 touchdowns. Former Michigan State quarterback Ricky Lombardi is under center and he has thrown for 781 yards, five touchdowns, and five interceptions.
Northern Illinois is 3-1-1 against the spread in their last five games. Toledo is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games. The favorite is 4-1 in the last five meetings. The under is 7-2 in the last nine meetings.
Toledo’s defense was strong in the last game, and they are going to slow down Northern Illinois in this game. I don’t know if that will be enough for the Rockets to cover the spread, but it will help keep this game under the total.
