The Georgia Southern Eagles will travel to Veterans Memorial Stadium to take on the Troy Trojans this Saturday night in College Football action.
The Georgia Southern Eagles snapped their 3-game losing streak and improved to 2-3 on the season after defeating the Arkansas State Red Wolves, 59-33, this past Saturday. Georgia Southern was outstanding forcing turnovers and had no trouble pulling away after 28-unanswered points gave the Eagles a 45-19 lead going into the 4th quarter. Georgia Southern outgained Arkansas State by a 540-524 margin and won the turnover battle by a 4-0 margin in the victory. Leading the way for the Eagles was Logan Wright who had 208 rushing yards & 2 TD’s on 10 carries.
On the season, Georgia Southern is averaging 25.0 ppg on 396.6 total yards per game (109.2 passing yds/g; 287.4 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Georgia Southern is led by their rushing attack which ranks 4th in College Football and is led by RB Logan Wright (57 att, 482 yards, 4 TD; 7 rec, 104 yards), RB Gerald Green (43 att, 294 yards, 5 TD), RB Jalen White (29 att, 199 yards, 2 TD), RB Amare Jones (28 att, 119 yards), & QB Justin Tomlin (37 att, 116 yards, 2 TD). QB Justin Tomlin has completed 41.8% of his passes for 248 yards, 0 TD, & 1 INT while QB Cam Ransom has completed 54.5% of his passes for 233 yards, 1 TD, & 0 INT. The top receiving threat for the Eagles has been Khaleb Hood (13 rec, 119 yards).
Defensively, Georgia Southern is allowing their opponents to average 33.8 ppg on 498.0 total yards per game (350.6 passing yds/g; 147.4 rushing yds/g).
The Troy Trojans lost their 2nd straight game and dropped to 2-3 on the season after being defeated by the South Carolina Gamecocks, 23-14, this past Saturday. Troy struggled with turnovers against the Gamecocks and could not fight back after a 74-yard pick-six by the Gamecocks David Spaulding gave South Carolina a 17-7 lead right before halftime. Georgia Southern was outgained by South Carolina by a 357-308 margin and committed 4 turnovers in the loss. Leading the way for the Trojans was RB B.J. Smith who had 102 rushing yards & 1 TD on 19 carries.
On the season, Troy is averaging 23.8 ppg on 337.2 total yards per game (248.0 passing yds/g; 89.2 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Troy has been led by QB Taylor Powell who has completed 66.9% of his passes for 1157 yards, 7 TD, & 5 INT. The top receiving threats for the Trojans have been Tez Johnson (30 rec, 299 yards, TD), Luke Whittemore (15 rec, 256 yards, TD), Reggie Todd (16 rec, 194 yards), & Jabre Barber (19 rec, 155 yards, TD). Leading the way for the Troy backfield has been the duo of Kimani Vidal (55 att, 224 yards, 2 TD) & B.J. Smith (42 att, 184 yards, 3 TD). Vidal missed last week’s game against South Carolina with an undisclosed injury and is currently questionable for this matchup.
Defensively, Troy is holding their opponents to an average of 17.0 ppg on 266.2 total yards per game (168.4 passing yds/g; 97.8 rushing yds/g).
The Eagles are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 conference game, however, are just 1-5 ATS in their last 6 road games. The Trojans are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game, however, just 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games as a home favorite.
These teams might have identical records, however, there is no question that Troy is the better here led by an outstanding defense that has already given Liberty & South Carolina all they could handle. Georgia Southern is coming off their best game of the season, however, it’s not a major accomplishment to score on Arkansas State and as I just don’t see the Eagles rushing attack having success against Troy’s 20th ranked rushing defense, I think the Trojans do enough offensively at home to cover this mid-range home spread. Good Luck!
