Florida State faces North Carolina on Saturday, October 9th at Kenan Stadium for a Week 6 ACC college football matchup.
Florida State is coming off its first win of the season in a 33-30 thriller over Syracuse. Florida State was a 5.5-point favorite in that contest, which makes Florida State 1-4 against the spread and straight up on the year. This has been a very disappointing season for a Florida State team that had so many expectations heading into the campaign. Florida State gave Notre Dame all it had in Week 1, but FSU was not able to build off the strong performance. Florida State averages 385 yards per game and 25 points per game, which is not going to cut it in the ACC. Florida State's defense has also not impressed, allowing 410 yards per game and 31 points per game to its opponents as well. Florida State went with QB Jordan Travis last week against Syracuse, with McKenzie Milton on the bench as the backup. Travis on the year has a 60% completion percentage, 368 passing yards, six passing touchdowns, and five interceptions.
North Carolina has also had a disappointing start to the year, just as many other ACC schools have. North Carolina has not played well on the road, losing both of its road games so far to Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech. At home, North Carolina is scoring 52 points per game and is a perfect 3-0. Last week against Duke, the Tar Heels were able to cover the 20-point spread in a 38-7 win. North Carolina started out slow offensively, but eventually, a rhythm was found between QB Sam Howell and WR Josh Downs. Downs had 8 receptions for 168 yards and a touchdown in the win, and he currently leads the team with 40 receptions and 620 receiving yards. North Carolina will look for a repeat performance from its offense against a weak Florida State secondary.
North Carolina is a 17.5-point favorite and the total is set at 64.5. I think North Carolina scores at will against a well below-average Florida State defense. Florida State's offense has become one-dimensional, focusing on the ground game but not getting into any kind of rhythm passing-wise. North Carolina was strong against the run against Duke, and I expect that to be enough for another win and cover from the Tar Heels at home.
