The Boise State Broncos and BYU Cougars face off on Saturday in a west coast college football showdown at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The last time these two teams faced off was in November of 2020, and BYU came away with the 51-17.
Boise State went through a lot of changes this offseason, and they currently sit with a 2-3 record. In the laser game against Nevada the offense was fine scoring 31 points, but the defense gave up 41 points, and that led to the defeat. The Broncos are averaging 32.6 points while their defense is giving up 22.8 points. Boise State has gotten out to fast start in games averaging 11.6 points per game in the 1st quarter. Under center for Boise State is Hank Bachmeier and he has thrown for 1,520 yards, 11 touchdowns, and four interceptions. The running game could be a little better, and they need a balanced attack in this game.
On the other side of this matchup is the BYU Cougars who sit with a 5-0 record and that includes wins over Arizona, Utah, and Arizona State. BYU is a strong offensive team, but there are some big questions heading into this game about who will be under center. Starting quarterback Jaren Hall is dealing with ribs injury and backup Baylor Romney is dealing with a concussion. If neither of them can go it will be freshman Jacob Conover who gets the start. Conover closed out the last game against Utah State and he went 5/9 throwing for 45 yards. BYU is averaging 29.2 points while the defense is giving up 19.4 points.
Boise State is 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games against teams with a winning record. BYU is 1-5-1 against the spread in their last seven games against teams with a losing record. The road team is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
BYU’s offense is going to be an issue with the quarterback issues that this team is dealing with. BYU’s defense is good, but it’s going to be their lack of offense that keeps Boise State around in this game. Back Boise State to cover the spread.
