The Temple Owls and Cincinnati Bearcats face off on Friday in a Week 6 AAC college football showdown at Nippert Stadium. These two last faced off in 2019, and Cincinnati came away with the 15-13.
Temple didn’t have many expectations this season but they have played decent this season sitting with a 3-2 record. In the last game, Temple had their biggest game of the season beating Memphis 34-31. D’Wan Mathis had a big game completing 35 of his 49 passes for 322 yards and three touchdowns. Temple is averaging 27.4 points while giving up 30.2 points per game. Mathis has thrown for 762 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception. On the ground, the Owls don’t have a bell cow, but three different players have put up 100 yards. Temple’s offense has been good most of the year, but the defense has been inconsistent. Even in the last game against Memphis, they still gave up 31 points. In this game, if they want any chance to win the defense is going to need to have his best game of the season.
On the other side of this matchup is the Cincinnati Bearcats who have to be in the conversation for a college football playoff spot. The Bearcats have a 4-0 record including a victory over Notre Dame 24-13 victory. They are averaging 38.2 points while the defense is giving up 14.5 points. They are averaging 411.8 yards per game which is 60th in football. Desmond Ridder is the key for this team having thrown for 1,045 yards, nine touchdowns, and two interceptions. Ridder has also run for 98 yards and three touchdowns. On defense, the Bearcats are giving up only 1.75 points per game, and that fast start has been a key in Cincinnati being the 5th ranked team in the country.
Temple is 4-9 against the spread in their last 13 games. Cincinnati is 4-1 against the spread in the last five games. The road team is 8-2 in the last ten meetings. Temple is 5-0 against the spread in their last five meetings against Cincinnati.
Cincinnati is the better team no doubt, but Temple has risen to the occasion when they have played the Bearcats. Temple is a perfect 5-0 against the spread in their last five games against Cincinnati. This is a letdown spot for Cincinnati, and Temple will get another good game out of D’wan Mathis. Back Temple to cover the spread.
