The Washington State Cougars and California Golden Bears face off on Saturday in a Pac-12 college football showdown at California Memorial Stadium. When these two teams faced off in 2019, Cal came away with the 33-20 victory.
Washington State has struggled this season and their only win came against Portland State, and even in that game they gave up 24 points. In the last game against Utah, they were a bit competitive, but they gave up 14 points in the 4th quarter to lose the game. Quarterback Jarrett Guarantano completed 25 of his 36 passes for 248 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. The interceptions are an issue, and he needs to clean those up in this game. Washington State on the season is averaging 23.5 points while their defense is giving up 29.7 points.
On the other side of this matchup is the Cal Golden Bears who have won only one game this season and that came against Sacramento State. In the last game against Washington, they forced overtime, but were defeated by seven points. Cal is averaging 28.7 points per game while their defense is giving up 29.25 points. Under center for Cal is Chase Garbers who has thrown for 1,093 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions. Damien Moore has been the best player for Cal on the ground rushing for 304 yards and five touchdowns.
Washington State is 3-7 against the spread in their last ten road games. Cal is 0-4 against the spread in their last four games as a favorite. The under is 4-1 in the last five meetings. The underdog is 5-1 against the spread in the last six meetings. Washington State is 7-3 against the spread in the last ten meetings in California.
Both of these teams can’t be trusted, but I especially don’t trust the defense of Washington State. Cal has an improved offense from years past, and they are going to have no issue scoring at least 35 points. That 35 point is going to be enough to come away with a cover of the spread.
Shane’s Pick Cal -7.5
