The Toledo Rockets will travel to Warren McGuirk Alumni Stadium to take on the UMass Minutemen this Saturday afternoon in College Football action.
The Toledo Rockets snapped a 2-game losing streak and improved to 2-2 on the season after defeating the Ball State Cardinals, 22-12, this past Saturday. Toledo was outstanding defensively against Ball State and held on for victory late after a 43-yard FG by the Rockets Thomas Cluckey gave the Rockets a 17-9 victory early in the 4th quarter. Toledo outgained Ball State by a 444-312 margin and forced 1 Cardinals turnover in the victory. Leading the way for the Rockets was RB Dequan Finn who had 106 rushing yards & 1 TD on 12 carries.
On the season, Toledo is averaging 26.5 ppg on 382.3 total yards per game (226.8 passing yds/g; 155.5 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Toledo has been led by QB Carter Bradley who has completed 61.7% of his passes for 813 yards, 3 TD, & 1 INT. QB Dequan Finn has completed 57.9% of his passes for 90 yards but has done damage with his legs as he has 213 rushing yards & 3 TD on 29 carries. Leading the way for the Rockets backfield has been Bryant Koback who has 275 rushing yards & 2 TD’s on 65 carries while also hauling in 95 yards & 1 TD on 12 receptions. The top receiving threats for the Rockets have been Devin Maddox (16 rec, 329 yards, 2 TD), Bryce Mitchell (9 rec, 146 yards), & Isaiah Winstead (10 rec, 97 yards).
Defensively, Toledo is holding their opponents to an average of 19.0 ppg on 338.0 total yards per game (185.5 passing yds/g; 152.5 rushing yds/g).
The UMass Minutemen are still searching for their first win of the season as the Minutemen fell to 0-4 on the season after being defeated by the 17th ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, 53-3, this past Saturday. UMass was dominated on both ends of the field against Costal Carolina and had no chance of fighting back into the game after going into halftime trailing by a 36-0 margin. UMass was outgained by Coastal Carolina by a 558-153 margin and didn’t force a single turnover in the loss. Leading the way for the Minutemen was WR Rico Arnold who had 4 receptions for 38 yards.
On the season, UMass is averaging 16.5 ppg on 304.0 total yards per game (204.0 passing yds/g; 100.0 rushing yds/g). Offensively, UMass has been led by Brady Olson who has completed 55.6% of his passes for 580 yards, 5 TD, & 3 INT. The top receiving threats for Olson and the Minutemen have been Rico Arnold (12 rec, 181 yards, 1 TD), Melvin Hill (7 rec, 101 yards, 1 TD), Tray Pettway (7 rec, 71 yards), & Jermaine Johnson Jr. (6 rec, 66 yards). Leading the way for the Minutemen backfield has been Ellis Merriweather who has 233 rushing yards on 43 carries.
Defensively, UMass is allowing their opponents to average 47.8 ppg on 534.5 total yards per game (291.3 passing yds/g; 243.3 rushing yds/g).
The Rockets are 4-0 TS in their last 4 road games, however, are just 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall. The Minutemen are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games following a straight up loss, however, are just 5-11 ATS in their last 16 games overall.
UMass might be the worst team in CFB, however, this is a matchup I like for the Minutemen. Toledo put the CFB world on notice in their near upset at Notre Dame earlier this season, however, the Rockets have looked far less impressive since that game as they lost at home to Colorado State before defeating a struggling Ball State team. UMass has had success offensively at home this season, putting up 28 points against both Boston College & Eastern Michigan and although I think Toledo will have no trouble winning this game through their rushing attack, I just don’t see the Rockets blowing out UMass by this many points. Take UMass and the points. Good Luck!
