The Texas Tech Red Raiders and West Virginia Mountaineers face off on Saturday in a Big 12 college football showdown at Milan Puskar Stadium. When these two teams faced off in 2020, Texas Tech came away with the 34-27 victory.
Texas Tech won their first three games of the season before losing their last game against the Texas Longhorns. The defense really struggled in the last game against the Longhorns giving up 70 points. Texas Tech on the season is averaging 38.7 points while their defense is giving up 33.5 points per game. One big issue for Texas Tech heading into this game is that starting quarterback Tyler Shough has a broken collarbone and is out until at least November. Starting in his place will be Henry Colombi who has thrown for 332 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception.
On the other side of this matchup is the West Virginia Mountaineers who have a 2-2 record but their two losses have been by a combined six points. In the last game against Oklahoma the defense was elite giving up only 16 points, but the offense could only manage 13 points and that led to the defeat. West Virginia’s strength is the defense and they are giving up only 16.7 points per game. Under center is Jarret Doege who has thrown for 889 yards, six touchdowns, and four interceptions. Leddie Brown is also having a big game rushing for 321 yards and five touchdowns.
West Virginia is 7-0-1 against the spread in their last eight home games. Texas Tech is 1-4-1 against the spread in their last six games in October. The over is 13-4-1 in Texas Tech’s last 18 games as an underdog. The favorite is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
Texas Tech is going to have some issues without their starting quarterback, and if West Virginia could slow down Oklahoma, they can slow down West Virginia. Look for West Virginia to also score at least 35 points, and that will be enough for them to cover the spread.
