Texas faces TCU on Saturday, October 2nd, at Amon G. Carter Stadium for a Week 5 Big 12 matchup.
Texas is coming off an absolute demolition of Texas Tech in last week's big rivalry game, 70-35. Texas scored at will in that contest, putting up 42 points by halftime and earning a total of 639 total yards of offense. 336 of those yards came on the ground, which makes for over 750 rushing yards in the last two weeks combined for the Longhorns. We knew Texas' offense was electric, but the defense has struggled a bit and is allowing more than 400 yards per game. Texas has allowed around 500 yards and around 38.5 points to the two Power 5 teams it has faced this season in Arkansas and Texas Tech. Texas' quarterback, Casey Thompson, completed 18 of 23 passes for 303 passing yards and five passing touchdowns last week against Texas Tech. Bijan Robinson is the team's leading rusher, as he has earned 436 rushing yards on 70 carries for five rushing touchdowns as well.
TCU was upset last week at the hands of the AAC's SMU in a high-scoring affair, 42-34. TCU was a 9-point favorite at home in that one but the Horned Frogs' defense could not stop the run. TCU surrendered 350 rushing yards on 52 total attempts for over 6.7 yards per carry. Offensively, TCU's Max Duggan completed 16 of 28 passes for 276 passing yards and three passing touchdowns. Zach Evans led the rushing attack with 113 yards on the ground as he remains the team's leading rusher by far. TCU is now 2-1 after beating Duquesne and Cal in its first two games of the season. This will be the first of nine straight conference games for TCU as it looks to pull off the upset in Week 5.
Texas is a 5-point favorite and the total is set at 65. I think we see an absolute shootout between two high-scoring teams in the Big 12. Texas should be able to run the ball all day long against a weak TCU defensive line and I expect TCU to do some damage in both the passing and rushing games as well. I think we have some value in the over, so that is where I am looking as of now.
