The Minnesota Golden Gophers and Purdue Boilermakers face off on Saturday in a Week 5 college football showdown at Ross-Ade. When these two teams faced off in November of 2020, Minnesota won 34-31.
The Minnesota Golden Gophers are coming off one of their worst losses of any power five team this season in their last game. Two games ago Minnesota beat Colorado 30-6 but in the last game, they went into a shell offense, and Bowling Green won 14-10. Tanner Morgan only completed 5 of his 13 passes for 59 yards and two touchdowns. The one bright spot of this offense has been Treyson Potts and in the last game, he rushed 27 times for 141 yards. Minnesota is averaging 25.5 points while their defense is giving up 21.2 points. On the season Morgan has thrown for 540 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. The Gophers have a bye week next week, so if Morgan were to struggle again in this game, there could be a quarterback change made.Chris-Autman Bell is the team’s best wide receiver but he is dealing with an ankle injury and it’s unclear if he can go in this game.
On the other side of this matchup is the Purdue Boilermakers who have won three of their four games this season with the only loss coming against Notre Dame. In the last game against Illinois, the defense was strong, giving up only nine points. The big question heading into this game for Purdue is who will start under center. Jack Plummer and Aidan O’Connell split reps in the last game and it’s unclear who will start in this game. David Bell, the team’s best wide receiver is dealing with a concussion and is questionable for this game. In this game if Purdue’s defense is strong, they should be in good shape.
Minnesota is 4-0 against the spread in their last four road games. Purdue is 1-4 against the spread in their last five home games. The over is 8-1 in the last nine meetings between Purdue and Minnesota.
Purdue’s last game was low scoring and so was Minnesota’s but all trends point towards the over. I think this number is a bit of an overreaction to how the Gophers played last week. I expect better play from Morgan, and Purdue will find offensive success against the Gophers secondary. The over is 4-0 in the last four meetings in Purdue. Back the over.
