The Toledo Rockets will travel to Scheumann Stadium to take on the Ball State Cardinals this Saturday afternoon in College Football action.
The Toledo Rockets lost their 2nd straight game and dropped to 1-2 on the season after being upset by the Colorado State Rams, 22-6, this past Saturday. Toledo had no answers on the offensive end against the Colorado State defense and could not fight back after a 70-yard punt return for a TD by the Rams Thomas Pannunzio gave Colorado State a 13-6 lead with 3:03 left in regulation. Toledo was outgained by Colorado State by a 319-291 margin while the Rockets and Rams each committed one turnover. Leading the way for the Rockets was QB Carter Bradley who completed 22 of 36 passes for 254 yards.
On the season, Toledo is averaging 28.0 ppg on 361.7 total yards per game (245.0 passing yds/g; 116.7 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Toledo has been led by RB Bryant Koback who had 199 yards & 3 TD’s on 43 carries while also hauling in 8 receptions for 58 yards. Toledo will use two QB’s in Carter Bradley (62.7 Comp %, 657 yards, 1 TD) & Dequan Finn (52.9 Comp %, 62 yards; 17 car, 107 yards, 2 TD). The top receiving threats for the Rockets have been Devin Maddox (14 rec, 254 yards, TD), Bryce Mitchell (7 rec, 121 yards), & Isaiah Winstead (7 rec, 63 yards).
Defensively, Toledo is holding their opponents to an average of 21.3 ppg on 346.7 total yards per game (184.0 passing yds/g; 162.7 rushing yds/g).
The Ball State Cardinals lost their 2nd straight game and dropped to 1-2 on the season after being defeated by the Wyoming Cowboys, 45-12, this past Saturday. Ball State had no answers for the Wyoming offensive attack in the 1st half and could not fight back after going into halftime trailing by a 31-0 margin. Ball State was outgained by Wyoming by a 378-260 margin and lost the turnover battle by a 3-0 margin in the loss. Leading the way for the Cardinals was RB Carson Steele who had 76 rushing yards & 1 TD on 13 carries.
On the season, Ball State is averaging 18.7 ppg on 319.7 total yards per game (185.3 passing yds/g; 134.3 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Ball State has been led by the running duo of Carson Steele (27 att, 173 yards, 3 TD) & Will Jones (36 att, 156 yards, 2 TD). QB Drew Plitt has completed 61.7% of his passes for 424 yards, 2 TD, 3 INT. The top receiving threats for the Cardinals have been Justin Hall (17 rec, 192 yards, 2 TD), Jayshon Jackson (17 rec, 157 yards), Yo’Heinz Tyler (7 rec, 55 yards), & Cody Rudy (6 rec, 34 yards).
Defensively, Ball State is allowing their opponents to average 36.7 ppg on 436.0 total yards per game (273.7 passing yds/g; 162.3 rushing yds/g).
The Rockets are 14-5 ATS in their last 19 games as a road favorite, however, are just 3-7 ATS in their last 10- road games. The Cardinals are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 conference games and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games as an underdog.
Ball State has not looked good so far this season, however, this is still a team that has a bunch of talent and has just underperformed. Toledo looked outstanding in a near upset against Notre Dame, however, the Rockets suffered an embarrassing loss at home against a Colorado State team that was beaten by an FCS team and allowed Vanderbilt to pick up their first win since 2019. Ball State was able to take down Toledo on the road last season and as I think Drew Plitt and the Cardinals come out strong in their first MAC game of the season, I think the play here is to take Ball State and the points. Good Luck!
