The SMU Mustangs will travel to Amon G. Carter Stadium to take on the TCU Horned Frogs this Saturday afternoon in College Football action.
The SMU Mustangs improved to 3-0 on the season after defeating the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, 39-37, this past Saturday. SMU looked like they were going to suffer their first loss of the season after a 47-yard FG by Louisiana Tech gave the Bulldogs a 37-33 lead with just 36 seconds left in regulation, however, the Mustangs were able to pull off the miracle win on a 33-yard TD pass to Reggie Robinson Jr. as time expired. SMU outgained Louisiana Tech by a 578-483 margin and won the turnover battle by a 1-0 margin in the victory. Leading the way for the Mustangs was QB Tanner Mordecai who completed 36 of 48 passes for 395 yards & 5 TD’s.
On the season, SMU is averaging 43.3 ppg on 534.7 total yards per game (341.7 passing yds/g; 193.0 rushing yds/g). Offensively, SMU has been led by QB Tanner Mordecai who has completed 73.0% of his passes for 1023 yards, 16 TD, & 2 INT. The top receiving threats for the Mustangs have been Danny Gray (16 rec, 228 yards, 4 TD), Rashee Rice (10 rec, 207 yards, 4 TD), Grant Calcaterra (12 rec, 193 yards, 3 TD), & Reggie Robinson Jr. (14 rec, 171 yards, TD). Leading the way for the Mustangs backfield has been the duo of Ulysses Bentley IV (33 att, 250 yards, TD) & Tre Siggers (34 att, 147 yards).
Defensively, SMU is holding their opponents to an average of 19.3 ppg on 440.3 total yards per game (316.0 passing yds/g; 124.3 rushing yds/g).
The TCU Horned Frogs improved to 2-0 on the season after defeating the California Golden Bears, 34-32, on September 11th. TCU trailed by a 19-14 margin at halftime, however, the Horned Frogs were outstanding offensively in the 2nd half and was able to hold off the Golden Bears after a 9-yard TD run by Max Duggan gave TCU a 34-26 lead. TCU outgained California by a 505-442 margin, however, did lose the turnover battle by a 1-0 margin in the victory. Leading the way for the Horned Frogs was RB Zach Evans who had 190 rushing yards & 1 TD on 22 carries.
On the season, TCU is averaging 39.5 ppg on 468.0 total yards per game (243.5 passing yds/g; 224.5 rushing yds/g). Offensively, TCU is led by QB Max Duggan who has completed 62.0% of his passes for 441 yards, 4 TD, & 2 INT while also rushing for 80 yards & 2 TD’s. The top receivers for the Horned Frogs have been Quentin Johnston (9 rec, 133 yards, 2 TD), Derius Davis (5 rec, 86 yards), Blair Conwright (5 rec, 78 yards, TD), & JD Spielman (3 rec, 35 yards, TD). Leading the way for the TCU backfield has been Zach Evans who has 217 rushing yards & 2 TD’s on 27 carries.
Defensively, TCU is holding their opponents to an average of 17.5 ppg on 289.5 total yards per game (192.5 passing yds/g; 97.0 rushing yds/g).
The Mustangs are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing less than 20 points in their previous game. The Horned Frogs are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games as a favorite and 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
TCU is a very good football team that will be tough to beat on the road, however, the one weakness that the Horned Frogs have is in their secondary and that is never a good thing when you’re going up against SMU. SMU comes into this game with the 11th ranked passing offense in College Football and as I think Tanner Mordecai will have no trouble throwing 3+ TD passes in this one, I think that SMU does enough with the points to cover. Good Luck!
