The Marshall Thundering Herd and Appalachian State Mountaineers face off on Thursday in a Week 4 college football showdown at Kidd Brewer Stadium. When these two teams faced off in November of 2020, it was Marshall that came away with the 17-7 victory.
Marshall opened up the season with two straight wins before losing their last game against East Carolina. The offense still scored 38 points, but they gave up 42 points, including being outscored 21-0 in the 4th quarter and that led to the loss. In the first couple of games, Marshall gave up only 17 points and they need to get that defense to be better in this game. Under center for Marshall is Grant Wells and on the season he is averaging 1,110 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions. Rasheen Ali has been the best player for Marshall on the ground putting up 293 yards and seven touchdowns.
On the other side of this matchup is the Appalachian State Mountaineers who have won two of their three games this year, but the only loss came by two points against Miami. This is the same tea that opened up their season against East Carolina and was able to win 33-19. The Mountaineers are a team that leans on their defense, and they need to be solid on that side of the ball again. Under center for Appalachian State is Chase Brice and on the season he has thrown for 751 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions. On the ground, Appalachian State uses a two-headed attack with Camerun Peoples and Nate Noel both rushing for over 250 yards.
Marshall is 5-2 against the spread in their last seven road games. Appalachian State is 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games on Thursday. The over is 6-1 in Marshall’s last seven games in September. The over is 9-4 in Appalachian State’s last 13 games played in September.
Appalachian State is the better team, but Marshall is going to keep it close. Marshall should have won the last game if they wouldn’t have blown it late. I expect Marshall’s defense is going to be better in this game, and that will be enough to keep this game close. This is too many points and Marshall will cover the spread.
Shane’s Pick Marshall +7
