San Jose State faces Hawaii on Sunday, September 19th at 12:30 am EST at Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex for a Week 3 college football matchup.
San Jose State is 1-1 on the year and had its bye week during Week 2 of the season. San Jose State defeated Southern Utah in Week 0 and then took a loss to the PAC-12's USC in Week 1, 30-7. San Jose State surprised the nation last season when it went 6-0 in the regular season and defeated Boise State in the Mountain West Championship game. San Jose State is led by its quarterback in Nick Starkel who had an excellent 2020 but has struggled in 2021 so far. Starkel has completed 40-73 passes for 702 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions. San Jose State's defense was not its sharpest against USC in which the defense allowed 416 yards to the Trojans. San Jose State will now open conference play on the road at Hawaii, which is never an easy trip to make.
Hawaii is one of the few teams in the country that have already gotten three games in this season. Hawaii opened the season with a loss to UCLA but followed it up with a victory over Portland State. Last week, the Bows traveled to Oregon State and lost 45-27 to the Beavers to move their record to 1-2 on the year. Hawaii has a very experienced defense but it has struggled mightily this season. Oregon State was able to destroy Hawaii on the ground, running for 256 rushing yards and 6.1 yards per attempt. Hawaii still has plenty of talent on its roster and should be a force in the Mountain West yet again this season.
San Jose State opens as a 6.5-point favorite and the total is set at 61. I think Nick Starkel and San Jose State offense is going to be too much for Hawaii here. Until Hawaii's defense can show me a strong four-quarter performance, I cannot back it here. This is a Hawaii team that is only going to get better as the season goes on, but I like San Jose State in this spot.
