The Virginia Cavaliers and North Carolina Tar Heels face off on Saturday in a Week 3 college football showdown at Kenan Memorial Stadium. North Carolina leads the all time series 64-58-4.
The Virginia Cavaliers have looked impressive to start the season. Virginia opened up their season with a 43-0 victory over William & Mary and in the last game against Illinois they won 42-14. Under center for Virginia is Brennan Armstrong and he looks like a star. In the last game he completed 27 of his 36 passes for 405 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception. The Cavaliers used a running back by committee approach and five different players rushed for at least 20 yards. Virginia is averaging 42.5 points per game while their defense is giving up seven points per game.
On the other side of this matchup is the North Carolina Tar Heels who opened up their season with a loss against Virginia Tech, but bounced back with a 59-17 victory in their last game. Sam Howell had some real struggles in Game 1, but he looked better in the last game completing 21 of his 29 passes for 352 yards and three touchdowns. Howell also rushed for another 104 yards and two touchdowns. North Carolina on the season is averaging 34.5 points per game while their defense is giving up 17 points per game. In this game, if they want to win, North Carolina is going to need the defense to be strong, or they will be in some trouble.
Virginia is 7-1 against the spread in their last eight games overall. North Carolina is 6-2 against the spread in their last eight home games as a favorite. The over is 13-5 in Virginia’s last 18 games overall. Virginia is 4-0 against the spread in their last four games against North Carolina. The under is 6-2-1 in the last nine meetings played between the two teams.
North Carolina played better in their last game, but I don’t expect them to win this game in blowout fashion. Brennan Armstrong has been strong for Virginia and he is going to attack a weak North Carolina defense. Armstrong’s play will help lead Virginia to cover the spread.
Shane’s Pick Virginia +8
