The Rice Owls and Texas Longhorns face off on Saturday in a Week 3 college football showdown at Texas Memorial Stadium.
The Texas Longhorns have gotten off to a terrible start to their season and the big news heading into this game is that they have made a quarterback change with Casey Thompson being named the starter for this game. Texas beat Louisiana in the first game, but in the last game against Arkansas, they gave up 40 points and that led to the 19 point defeat. This is a defense that is talented, and high expectations heading into the season, but in the last game, it’s clear this is a team that still has a long ways to go. In the last game running back, Bijan Robinson had 19 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown. Texas needs to have a lot of production from the running backs in this game.
On the other side of this matchup is the Rice Owls who have struggled to start the season. Rice was defeated 38-17 by Arkansas in the first game, and in the last game against Houston, they were defeated 44-7. Former Nebraska Cornhusker Luke McCaffrey is the starting quarterback for Rice but he really struggled in the last game completed 9 of his 19 passes for 86 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. Khalan Griffin was strong on the ground rushing 19 times for 86 yards. In this game, if Rice wants to win of course the offense is going to be better, but the defense needs to slow down the Texas offense.
Rice is 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games against the Big 12. Texas is 5-1 against the spread in their last six non-conference games. Rice is 1-4 against the spread in their last five meetings against the Longhorns in Texas. The favorite is 6-2 in the last eight meetings played between Rice and Texas.
Texas didn’t look good in the last game against Arkansas, but playing the Razorbacks is a lot different than playing Rice. The Owls offense has proven to be awful their first couple of games, and it’s not going to magically get better in this game. Rice’s lack of scoring will lead to Texas covering the spread.
