The Northwestern Wildcats and Duke Blue Devils face off in a Week 3 college football showdown at Wallace Wade Stadium. These two teams last faced off in September of 2018 and it was Duke that came away with the 21-7 victory.
It appears it will be another down season for the Duke Blue Devils who currently sit with a 1-1 record. Duke opened up their season losing to Charlotte 31-28 before bouncing back in their last game against NC A&T winning 45-17. In the last game quarterback Gunnar Holmberg completed 20 of his 27 passes for 270 yards. Running back Mataeo Durant had 15 rushing attempts for 41 yards and three touchdowns. Even though they won in the last game, they need to be more efficient with the ball, especially running. 2.7 yards per carry won’t be what brings this team to their second win of the season.
On the other side of this matchup is the Northwestern Wildcats who sit with a 1-1 record. Northwestern lost to Michigan State in their first game before beating FCS level Indiana State in their second game. Even though Northwestern won the last game against the Sycamores, they only scored 24 points, and they can’t feel great about the outlook of their offense. Hunter Johnson is under center and against Indiana State, he went 9-16 for 66 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Running back Evan Hall did have a big game rushing for 126 yards and two touchdowns. In this game. Northwestern needs to try to get Johnson into a rhythm early and find some success through the air.
Northwestern is 4-1-1 against the spread in their last six games following a straight-up win. Northwestern is 6-2 against the spread in their last eight games against the ACC. Duke is 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games against the Big Ten. The underdog is 7-1 against the spread in the last eight meetings played between the two teams.
This is an ugly game and with both teams having so many question marks, one that is difficult to cap. The one player I really don’t trust in this game is Hunter Johnson, and I expect he is going to struggle to throw the ball again. Northwestern’s lack of scoring is going to let them down, and Duke will cover the spread.
