Kent State faces Iowa on Saturday, September 18th, at Kinnick Stadium for a Week 3 college football matchup.

Kent State is coming off a 60-10 win over VMI in its last game in Week 2 of the college football season. Kent State has one of the tougher schedules in the MAC as it not only has to face Iowa this week, but it already had to place Texas A&M in Week 1 and will play at Maryland in its next game as well. This difficult schedule should certainly do the team well when the time comes for MAC conference play, but for now, Kent State is going to struggle on the scoreboard. Kent State is led by head coach Sean Lewis who is in his fourth year at Kent State. Kent State's quarterback is Dustin Crum who has had a very successful four seasons with the Golden Flashes. Crum has struggled so far this season, only completing 24 of 43 passes for 269 passing yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Kent State ran the ball a total of 62 times for 494 yards against VMI, good enough for 8.0 yards per attempt. Kent State's defense has struggled to stop opposing ground games but its secondary has held up virtually well.

Iowa is 2-0 already this season and is now ranked inside the Top-5 of the AP Polls right at #5. Iowa started the season with an impressive home win over Indiana in which the team forced three interceptions and held the Hoosiers to 6 total points. Last week, Iowa took down its rivals in Iowa State yet again and this time it was by a 27-17 final score. Iowa's defense has been excellent thus far, putting a ton of pressure on opposing quarterbacks and not allowing much on the ground either. Iowa allowed only 233 yards to Indiana and 339 to Iowa State. Iowa's offense has not fared as well, but with the way its defense has played, the offense has not had to be excellent.

Iowa opens as a 23-point favorite and the total is set at 56.5. I may have been tempted to take Dustin Crum, Kent State, and the points here but Crum has not looked as sharp as he was in 2020. I think Crum eventually figures it out, but this hostile environment in Iowa is not the best place for him and the Golden Flashes at the moment. I will take the under, as I think Iowa controls the tempo here and earns a comfortable victory in which its defense reigns supreme yet again.
